Does anyone know how much the DVDs are going for? Because I would love to get Live free or die hard for less than $15

Another difference between BB and CC:
CC had low ceilings, badly lit and claustrophobic layout.
BB has the large open, high ceiling, well lit space.
And BB has that order online pickup at store which helps as well.

Funny how I keep hearing all these horror stories about Circuit City. There was a fairly new store right by my house that looked almost identical to Best Buy (well lit, open, great layout), and was generally a great place to shop at. Then I went back to an older Circuit City in a different state, and yeah, that place was absolutely terrible (but was the place where I finally found a Wii when they were always completely sold out a few years ago). Been adding to my audio systems lately, the guys there have been extremely helpful, so it looks like I'll have to complete the collection sooner than I had planned.

BTW, sure, I could save a few bucks on Amazon, but that doesn't hold a candle to being able to flip speakers on and off in a room, I just prefer brick and mortar stores to waiting a week or so to have something shipped to me that I can't touch before I buy and receive it.

So yeah, bottom line, stop saying idiot things like 'well my CC was crappy, so obviously every single one of them in the US was crappy.' No, that's just straight up not true. And they're going under because they supported Republicans? Seriously? Wow.

Sorry, it's my fault they went out of business. I'm one of those guys who went in to touch and feel a product to see if I liked it, then went home and ordered it online. I could save around 30% plus pay no sales tax. The only thing I buy from BB or CC is low cost everyday items like blank media and ink.

Blank media and printer ink is so much cheaper online too though.

Circuit City went bankrupt because they decided to pay more to CEO's who were bankrupting the company than to pay more to the people on the floor actually selling their products. If some CEO is bankrupting your company you don't pay more to keep him onboard that's ridiculous.

'Liquidation Sales' today are an attempt to rip-off of the ignorant.

My apologies for shouting. As dXTC pointed out above, the liquidator's practice is to JACK UP prices, to show 'big discounts' from the original MSRP. The reality is that prices at CC were lower last week than today. The bottom line advice for any value-shoppers remains the same: know what's a good price before you even bother to go.

And if in doubt, use your iPhone to Google it right there in the store.
-hh

Saw a piece on furniture store liquidators on TV. The liquidators bring in truckloads of their own merchandise to sell. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same at electronics stores. So, the item you're eyeing may not have ever been sold at a Circuit City. You may start seeing strange brands you've never seen at CC before, or models that have been discontinued for a long time. I think that's why these liquidation sales drag on for months.

Wasn't Circuit City the SAME store that loudly proclaimed it's financial 'smarts' by firing all of it's highest paid workers about 2 years ago? They claimed it made sense to fire $25/hr store employees in favor of new-hired $10/hr employees.

Too bad they didn't realize that when they fired the $25/hr workers, they fired all the EXPERIENCE.

Shoppers quickly realized that the $10/hr workers didn't know HI DEF from DOLBY from a dishwasher and so they shopped elsewhere.

Imagine that. No customers. And now they're filing for bankruptcy. Sorry, so sympathy from me.

Home Depot did the same thing about 6-8 years ago and it cost them dearly. It cost the CEO his job, if I remember correctly.

Circuit City's prices have been historically higher than average compared to other B & M stores, and certainly higher than online.

Price-savvy shoppers could easily spot "off" pricing from Circuit City. And when they would have "sales", it would typically be the average going rate price, while showing a jacked-up "original" price. They weren't fooling anyone. (Well, maybe some...)

When the liquidators come to town expect underwhelming sales. First, most of the best products will have been picked clean by the staff. Next, the "sale" prices they display will be nothing more than showing a jacked-up original MSRP and then their "sales" price, which will be close to the normal price you'd pay anyway.

I say GOOD RIDDANCE to Circuit City.

The one and only time I was into a Circuit City, I saw something that bothers me to this day. A hispanic woman and her child were there and clearly she spoke minimal English. She approached two "salesmen" and from what I heard I think she was looking for the bathroom. The two knucklehead "salesmen" gave her a really hard time, and were clearly trying to be as unhelpful as possible. Finally the directed her to the bathroom, the one proceeded to make sexual gestures behind her back while the other pranced around pretending to have to go to the bathroom. Both guys were talking in their best Spanglish accents and whooped it up at this poor woman's expense. I was so disgusted I turned around and walked out of the store.

I doubt that was part of the Circuit City training program. More likely it was due to their bad upbringing, or this was in one of those areas where nastiness to "others" is a favorite local sport.

Yes, and I believe that CEO was one Robert Nardelli. After the Home Depot debacle, he took his **cough**legendary**cough** sense of vision to Chrysler.

Great track record there, Bob.

ADDENDUM: Not that Nardelli really had to go to Chrysler; his severance package from Home Depot was worth over $200 million, including $20 million in cash. Some people just don't know when to stop.

:apple:TV - is that for a new one?

Yup! I actually had just bought one from Apple Store just over a week ago, so I took the one I bought at CC today immediately over to Apple Store and returned it with my receipt from the other one. Saved myself $111 and change.

Just got back from CC again with another tv for my brother. The CC near him was out of them. Now the one near me is out of them, too :D

Bye-bye, CC

Haven't been in a CC store for years and won't miss them at all. Boycotted them after a customer service issue that bordered on criminal behavior. Sorry about the 34,000 who are losing their jobs, minus two morons.

Thanks - will check on the way home. But the ones around me haven't really carried them for close to a year now...

I don't know if i should go now to get a :apple:tv, or just wait until they update it

Since it didn't refresh in January, I got tired of waiting.

Although, I sure do feel better only spending $124 on it since I could, technically, just hook my MBP up to the tv and use front row quite easily. But who wants to do that, right? :p

I certainly chose to save the $111

You're not just kidding. After buying the Samsung LN52A550 HDTV for $1670 (plus a free HD Tivo), I found myself at CC and wondered what their price was for the same tv. I was beyond shocked to find the price a jaw-dropping $2500.

Best buy made the bet that the super large store format was the way to go...and they were apparently right.

Funny, Best Buy has changed their mind about that. About 5 or 6 years ago they were piloting a new store concept. Here In Pittsburgh PA was where they built one of the first protoypes. Since the proto stores, they have actually gotten smaller. Their new builds are about 35% smaller than they were before.

Even funnier, thier new stores are more dimly lit, and they have lost the open layout they once had. Aisles are very close together and congested, and its' harder to identify exactly where a department is located. The DVD and CD aisles are so crammed two people can't fit in the aisle. They are barely 3 feet wide (which is the min. for ADA laws). The racks are also taller, so you feel buried behind them.

While I couldn't swear to it, some departments have a smaller selection (desks, entertainment centers, etc. are more sparse) but this design crams in about the same amount of merchandise. BUt its VERY claustrophobic and dark In fact, I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't in a CC, because CC always felt like a dungeon to me. I just felt odd in their stores.

Target is also doing something similiar. Their new stores are less square footage, but new fixtures use less space and allow them to merchandise the same amount of stuff.

It's not about the support - it's about the warranty - show me how to fix a laptop screen that has gone bad in year 3 for cheaper than the price of Applecare

You need to broaden your scope. You can't look at one product and justify the expense. You must look at all products you've bought with extended warranties and realize the sum of the money spent on the warranties would have easily covered the cost of repairing the one that broke.

On a side note, replacing a burnt out LCD backlight does cost less than the price of applecare.

The screen for my late-2008 macbook pro was on ebay for around 250. Applecare is 350. My labor is free. However, i wouldn't expect to pay more than 50 for labor. It's an under 30 minute job for someone who does it for a living.

Granted Apple would charge you $1000 because it'd be a "level 3" repair.

I have a great sense of humor, your comment however was a mere steropying remark with no merit at all.

The closing of the stores may be of no loss to you, but to those who have just lost their jobs and have families to support... it is actually a big deal.

Learn some tact.

I have plenty of tact, furthermore, this is not a forum of tact.

CC is a dinosaur in the industry they are in. As I stated before, I have been a satisfied customer of amazon.com prime for over two years. I can log on, find exactly what I want and have it delivered to my door in 2 days. 1 day if I want to pay $4. The majority of the time, amazon is cheaper than even costco or other discount retailers.

Of course I have sympathy for people on an individual basis that loose their job. However, CC's business model was poor and I for one, truly believe the employees of CC as a whole are better off not having to work there.

I would get the same treatment if I walked into an Apple store and told them I voted for Bush twice. I might even be killed. so I guess this means that every single Circuit City store has tons of racist jerks and that is why they closed. I have never seen that in a CC.

They are closing because they had crap for prices. Even while they are folding you can get much cheaper everywhere else.

Best Buy is upbeat because people turn the stereo systems all the way up and the employees have to let them.

I have never really heard any music playing beside whats n the TV's

I've always questioned putting a store in land zoned commercial.
Here is a pic of a commercial zone:
port-of-los-angeles.jpg

Honestly, look at were these places are (at least in tampa) Usually in second rate locations.

And I suppose you're going to tell me that Best Buy employees are?

I was standing in the Mac display next to a guy selling a 24" iMac to a young couple (in their 20s). The guy was a gamer, so the Best Buy drone told them that you could put a GTX 280 in the 24" iMac...

Yes and no. I actually WORKED at both stores. While the BB guys arent geniuses. BB does do a MUCH better job at training their staff on what they are selling. CC basically just tells you "your selling TV's, HD is good"

HA. *pause for breathing* HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...

The freak squad doesn't know any more about computers than the people they service.

Sure their not mac geniuses. But they are trained to fix most common pc problems and generally can fix a regular consumers pc.

To the person who said CC has Firedog..
Now CC did have firedog.. But basically all they do is install stuff. They cant help you with your computer or anything like that, they just hang your new plasma on the wall...

Also i got a little (insider info)
So my GF's mom was interviewing a former CC employee for a job. Apparently were CC really went wrong (according to him) is they pretty much put all of their eggs in one basket (TV's) with the recent recession, TV sales have been down but it hasn't effected less expensive items as much (video games, desktop computers, small electronics, etc). Also he said the lack of adopting lower priced TV options such as the vizio when they first cam out also hurt them a lot.
