On a sillier note, I'm glad this thread hasn't devolved into an "OMIGOD they dumbed down Civ no more stacks of doom research sliders spies blah blah blah"...

OMIGOD, I can't believe they didn't add the iPad as a new Wonder!

Quad Core as the recommended system requirements? 512MB VRAM? 4 GB RAM?! My goodness! That's ridiculous. It's that way on the PC too. I love Civilization, but... wow.

Oh great, another technology tree to learn and prioritise, and all the buildings to re-evaluate. Took me nearly 4 years to master Civ IV - that was hard work, maybe my fault as I kept jumping back to Civ III to win a game to boost my confidence.

Can't wait.

Seen a few posts where there are video issues on a Mac Pro. Anyone with Mac Pro have any success with the Aspyr / GameAgent version ?

Could be a big hit, I suppose people are tired waiting for Diablo III.

FWIW, Installed flawlessly from Steam. I had already purchased and installed the Windows version when it came out. No charge, and it plays wonderfully. I am using maximum resolution of my i5 iMac.

The original Civilization was actually the first computer game I bough for my Macintosh Performa 400 back in '93. I remember that it was truly a dangerous game as it sucked you in and never let go, resulting in all night sessions. It came on five floppy discs and it really made the 68030 and all of the 4 MB of RAM work hard.

I'm thinking of buying a new iMac to play Civ 5 on. Do I really need to go top of the range to get it to work?

I don't know much about all this sort of stuff. Sorry for being an idiot.

which to buy in store?

Can I buy the box in stores and still play on Windows and Mac? I don't know anything about Steam, but see many people bought on Windows and can now buy on Mac. I have a Mac that I bootcamp often, and a Windows desktop. I'd like to be able to play on both, and get this as a gift so hoping to direct people to the correct version to purchase....

I admit that I haven't played or even seen Civ 5. I've seen 2-4. But in my opinion, the best Civ version is still the first. I hated the last (4) version.

Specs too high

Damn!

Unless you have a brand new spankin' Mac, forget about this game. My three-year old MacBook (2.16Ghz) doesn't even come close with no ability to upgrade.

This is a great shame because I have loved Civ Rev on my iPhone and would have liked Civ II on my '99 G4 (400MHz-Ethernet) PowerMac. I said would have because that Mac met the min req. for Civ II but ran like molasses in December.

What a shame because they could have had my $50. But truly, why do their specs have to be so high? It's not like the're modeling 3D objects. This is all set graphics.

Got through one game last night on my early 2008 Mac Pro. A few issues, but no crashes. Game is not updated with the most recent Windows patch, nor do I guess that the upcoming Windows patch will be immediately ready for the Mac version.

FWIW, this also runs fairly well (although significantly slower) under Parallels, for those times when you don't feel like restarting into Boot Camp.

Overall, glad it's out there; it's definitely preferable over running in Parallels, but the game needs to be updated with the latest patches, some of which address key issues in gameplay.

Well, the great thing about all those building choices in CivV is that just about none of them are worth building outside of monument/theater/library/circus.

Forbidden Palace though... a must build...

I've noticed the same. Building maintenance is my biggest pain or running out of things to build that aren't going to eat up my gold outside of wonders.

I'm getting the hang of social policies as well. I should spend more prep before games instead of just playing them.

I remember the giant fold out tech and unit tree from Civilization II: Test of Time. Not only did it cover the standard and extended games but Fantasy and Science Fiction scenarios as well.

I had already purchased this for the pc when it first came out, so I didn't have to pay anything to download this off of Steam. I am using a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with 2 gigs of RAM, and the NVidia 9400M. Aside from some slight lag, it seems to run just fine with everything set at about Medium. So far so good...

Wait, I have the same MBP. How do I run a PC game on my mac?

To those that were wondering,

I had bought the special edition of Civ V back in September (the boxed unit). Once I installed it on the windows side, it auto placed it in Steam. This allowed me to download the mac version yesterday through Steam. So if you want you can buy the boxed copy of Civ V, but you need a computer that can run windows to do the initial installation onto Steam.

As for the game, I only had the chance to play it for about 30 min. I have a stock iMac 27" i3 (mid 2010), and with most settings on the med-high range, it ran well, but that's to be expected for the first few hours I would imagine. Like most people said I won't really know how well it performs until late in the game. However, I noticed that there's this giant grey bar on the right side of my screen. I doesn't prevent me from playing, but it's kinda annoying.

Install to two Macs ?

Can I install the game to two different Macs to play on (not at the same time) ?

Does it matter how I buy it (Steam vs Box, etc.) ?

Monument ? Theatre ? Circus ?? what no marketplace ? or bank ?

I can see a bank consuming 700bn in gold each turn in this version.
