I'd like to use my MBP to display movies via a projector, but I'm not sure of the best possible way to do that. Do I have to mirror my desktop to the projector or can I have the projector display only the output of a program like VLC? Can I close the lid during the movie without using an external keyboard or mouse? Or if one of those are required, will my iPhone 4S do?

I have the rMBP with Mountain Lion.

    Thanks!

If you want use AirPlay using appleTV or any situation where you don't want to have to connect an external display keyboard, and mouse to enable clamshell mode, look up:

Works great for me with AirPlay.
