Clamshell mode?

I'd like to use my MBP to display movies via a projector, but I'm not sure of the best possible way to do that. Do I have to mirror my desktop to the projector or can I have the projector display only the output of a program like VLC? Can I close the lid during the movie without using an external keyboard or mouse? Or if one of those are required, will my iPhone 4S do?

I have the rMBP with Mountain Lion.
