"Hey Ive, how should we design this dongle?" "Just make it a square, and stop bothering me, I'm designing my next xmas tree"

According to the apologists on this forum he has a whole design TEAM to work on stuff so stop weighing in (or trolling, apparently) on the poor guy.

Of course, that line of defence backfires a bit when you start to look at the product lineup and how it has evolved over the last few years....

In all seriousness, I miss Ive's design language from the 90s, TAM, iMac, Powerbook Pismo, eMate, all sexy and curvy. Now all we get is square dongles and patented iPhone corners.

And flat non-ergonomic Apple TV remotes*

Hey mac rumors writer.... it's called a "Christmas Tree". Not a "Festive Tree". Just like you wouldn't call a Menorah a "festive candle holder".

There are no trees used to celebrate Hanukkah, or New Years. Only Santa comes to put presents under trees for little kids... it's santas tree... for Christmas. Not "festive".

Thanks

Here we go again.

(Braces for next wave of utterly inane criticism and trolling).

On a side note, why is this in the Mac blog?
If apples products recently would not be so underwhelming I guess there would be more positive mood concerning this Christmas installation.

I would say it's apples (Ives) own fault

Ive needs to go—he is overrated and feels like he's been resting on his laurels for some time now.
Resting on his laurels you say? More like laid out flat on a hammock linked up to a benzodiazepine drip.

This "installation" couldn't be more "emperors new clothes" if it actually tried. Laughable.

Leaving aside the question of how derivative (*cough* Dieter Rams) his design is, I used to sort of admire Ive.

But its long since become clear that he's quite literally disappeared up his own fundament*

Walked past it tonight - stunning and amazing!
And give the Constitution a rest, okay? It's Christmas!
Bruce Munro does light installations that are "stunning and amazing". This is neither.

As for being Christmas, is it really? In my timezone, it's still November 21st. Yeah yeah, bah humbug and all that...

Both your comments are subjective. Each to their own.

Symptomatic of the new Apple - vanity projects that are for the select rich few - most of whom will only be able to discern good design if their "art advisor" tells them it's good. I hope Ive puts as much effort into decoration at Apple offices worldwide to improve the environment for staff.

Lol, any Animal Crossing players here? I just played this weekend after abandoning the game for almost a year. One of my character's rooms had the large Festive Tree in it. I think in Animal Crossing the menorah is called a Festive Candle.

As for Jony's tree display, it's very true to how he approaches design. First, it does seem to be an adaptation of an idea already seen, as an earlier post shows. He put a lot of thought into engineering a complex process to produce a controversial minimalist result that is still apparently very pleasing to the public, yet provides plenty of fodder for the critics.
