Clarification on iphoto's trash bin needed

Hi there,

I've just started really using iphoto 09 on my 1 year old macbook and just had a quick straightforward question that I am unsure of.

When I delete a photo in iphoto (by pressing the delete key on my keyboard) it moves the photo to a trash bin within iphoto....by emptying this trash bin am I removing the image from my hard drive or only from iphoto?

I want to remove some images from iphoto but don't want to completely loose them off my hard drive.
