This idea of planned obsolescence baffles me. Apple are the only tech company that make products that last. I am on my Macbook Air from 2013 and it is running absolutely perfectly on the latest OS and has run perfectly for the last 2 years. I could never say that for any windows laptop of the same price, and windows charges for OS upgrades!!

Also I had a 4s on iOS 9 and it was fine.

Running a mid 2010 17" pro with el-capitan. No complaints whatsoever.

I would not call a lawsuit against a company, brought on by consumers, "good publicity".
All major corporations have lawsuits against them; it's a fact of life. Unless there is some criminally abhorrent crime who really pays attention except a few posters on an anonymous internet board.

People love to start things. If you learn about technology and how things become outdated so quickly, even just the basics, it all makes sense. Apple probably does do it on purpose but nobody really knows.

That makes no sense whatsoever. If Apple would do this on purpose it would have come out in court previously, through a whistleblower or by someone investigating actual code. This is too big to cover up.

The patterns we observe are also present at other producers:
  • Newer versions of OSes slow down older phones. That is as much the case with Android and Windows as it is with Apple. Absolutely no difference at all. The reason why it is more apparent for Apple is because Apple is the only one actually providing OS upgrades to older devices.
  • Then the absence of features in older hardware. Go look on other platforms and you will see the same, but in a much more chaotic fashion. Samsung retires functions on a regular basis for its mobile platforms and other hardware. I get monthly notifications on my top of the line TV that they will retire software functionality.
What so many people complain about here is common to the entire industry. If Apple is not communicating clearly then they should be corrected and provide a solution. But the complaints about obsolescence do not make sense without any actual factual proof.

i've been constantly pleased with how well my apple computers have aged. if anything it makes the constantly degrading experiences on iOS stand out that much more.

My 4s runs well with the 9.2 too. Not as smooth as my 6. But good enough for an ageing 4.5 year old phone. Slightly slow. But does everything that my wife demands of it.

So then your point does not stand. So what is the point? When you said PC slows down overtime, I said not necessarily. Then you said iOS 9 runs perfectly on your iPhone 4S. Let's just assume it is true, then you just disprove yourself. If it is not true, then Apple is doing terrible job on optimizing iOS 9. If Windows can run perfectly on old hardware, iOS 9 can.

Windows doesn't. I had to upgrade my ram from 2gb to 4gb. My computer used to run 7 perfectly well with 2gb.

Regardless it's still publicity and this is starting to hit more major news, not just Internet forums.

Its really not that expensive at all to move to a new phone. Normally you can sell your old phone so if you upgrade lets say every 2 years your looking at $500 every two years. If you finance it with your carrier its ~$25 a month. Pretty low cost for such a advanced and high usage device IMO.

Now let's recalculate this equation for the rest of the world. For a typical family of four, all with iPhones, thats, um...a lot more money :). And for families that also need to budget a household, schooling for kids, extracurricular activities, internet access, college, weddings, bar mitzvahs, every little (or not so little) bit counts. Granted I agree this lawsuit isn't going to go anywhere, but I do so get annoyed when I see posts that continue to suggest how disposable personal income and gadgetry has become.

When my kids came of cellphone age, I tried hard to get them a sensible option that wasn't an iPhone and found that it simply wasn't cost effective to do anything but (not gonna get into details here). So now that we are on the full iPhone ecosystem and NOT in a subsidized plan, we only upgrade when a phone breaks (or is too slow to deal with), and we upgrade by purchasing used. Right now we all have 5s's, are happy with them, and ain't upgrading any time soon. If "iOS10" came out and provided to be a necessary update AND proved to slow the 5s down beyond reasonable usability, we'd be looking at dropping a grand or so to upgrade.

Christ!, who holds on to such relics these days?

I don't have a 4s, but whenever I hold one (or a 3Gs) I marvel at the beautiful form factor.
If they did an iPhone with the same form factor now I would be in line for one.
I resent not being able to use the phone with one hand anymore.

other than being reported as a news item; I doubt there will be little change in the publics perception of Apple at large due to this lawsuit, which is what you are implying. To me this is business as usual in corporate America.

I mean, my iPhone 5s now performs like an iPhone 4s with iOS 9 and Apple has done nothing about it. So yes, I'd like to see this lawsuit continue.

Quite ironically, the iPhone 5 is faster than both the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 on iOS 9.

Your 5s has an issue. Maybe try a dfu restore? With two 5s in the house they have not experienced any slowdown.

Upgrade to SSD will solve lots of problems. I have old Celeron laptop with 2GB RAM, upgrade to SSD and Windows 10 runs like dream. And it is beauty of PC where parts are upgradeable. It is so sad that Apple is moving away from upgradeability for Macs.

Can non-business customers who upgrade to Windows 10 downgrade to Windows 7?

Yes.

My iPad mini 1, iPad mini 3, and two iPhone 4s work fine with iOS 9. I appreciate the extra features that are now available.

At least you can downgrade OS X ;)

My dad. And likely LOTS and LOTS of others. We got him an iPhone for the messaging, email and FaceTime. Plus being able to track him down on FindMyFriends is a huge bonus for reducing worry as he gets on in age. He also occasionally surfs on it, navigates with maps, and reads email but otherwise he has no need for 99% of the apps or iPhone functionality out there. For these reasons the iPhone4 (not even a 4S) is PERFECT for him. As long as it runs the latest OS so all the above things still work, it's not a relic.

This

Lots of people who buy new Apple devices pass their previous device on to a friend or family member, this gets them into the eco system, which means more potential App Store/iTunes purchases and even buying a new device them self in the future if they enjoy it enough. Ive seen it happen a million times.

I think the people behind this lawsuit might have misunderstood the source of the issue. My 4S does indeed now freeze, slow down, and even reboot on its own after I upgraded to iOS9. However, in my case the problem seems to arise from lack of memory when apps update, not problems inherent in iOS. Obviously after an upgrade to iOS, there is a rush among developers to update apps and sometimes this amounts to hundreds of megabytes of updates.

Would I like to see Apple manage memory better when apps update? Absolutely. Should they be sued for not doing so? Absolutely not. Quite apart from anything Apple has repeatedly commented in public that they expect to support phones with iOS for about 2 years. After that, all bets are off. I would like Apple to continue to support older models with iOS updates insofar as possible, but that is mostly about environmental sustainability.
