I run Fontographer 4.1.3 from '96 under classic. Some years ago I experimented more with it, but now I only use it to convert mac fonts to pc fonts for a programmer I often work with.

There exists a newer version for OsX but I don't want to pay 350 bucks for it since I only use the application for this one feature.

It doesn't stop me from buying an intel mac though, as I plan to get a desktop and keep my powerbook for portable needs. And apart from that, I still have my cube operational too.

Despite using OSX since about 03, I still don't like how it handles burning discs. So I boot into OS9 whenever I want to burn a CD and use Toast.

Resedit, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex, Diablo II, Total Annihilation and a few other classic games are still needed. Likewise, all my sister's games and stuff run in classic.

Actually, the biggest worry about getting my new intel iMac is that the register application for EV: Nova won't work in Tiger (V1.0.0; I don't have access to the email used to register the game anymore, so I have to work around it). :(

Oh well.

you can run Unreal Tournament using the OS X conversion. It's pretty good.

I'd suggest you look it up at versiontracker.com

What about our computers that do not run OS X? Or does this only apply to classic mode?

Classic was my question. I know quite a few people keep some very old Macs up and running but I am more interested to know how many OSX users are having a tough time weaning themselves off Classic and might be holding back from moving to Intel because of this. A significant number, I get the idea.

I presume you mean Mac OS 9.2.2? Is the Classic Environment starting up?

Oops! Yes, I mean Mac OS 9.2.2. It was on disc 3 of the CDs that came with the iBook.

When I double click on a MacPaint 2.0 file, Classic launches--the blue Apple in the upper left corner of the screen becomes red/yellow and clicking on it gives the old familiar menu of Chooser, et al. When I double click a document written in MacWrite 5.0 I get a brief flash of the blue and white Claris logo and then nothing further happens.

Thanx for your quick response. HHS

I'm going to have to guess (since I can't test it myself) that MacWrite 5.0 isn't compatible with OS 9. A long shot: set Classic to start with extensions off. You can also try rebuilding the Classic desktop (all in the Classic System Preferences panel). Or possibly an extension is required that you aren't loading. Otherwise I'd suggest googling MacWrite and Classic to find out if anyone else has encountered this issue.

I'd kill for UT GOTY in OS X. :(
Unreal Tournament has been on Mac OS X for quite a few years... just about as long as Mac OS X has been around.

I still play it all the time (in Mac OS X)... and didn't kill anyone to do it.

Total Annihilation is about the only Classic Application that I'll still want to use in the future. It is still one of my favorite RTS games. I guess with an Intel Mac I'll just have to get the Windows version of it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried them and same result - flash of Claris logo window and then nada, just the document sitting on the desktop.

I'm wondering if I could find a used early Mac or LC II. I was left with these old files when my LC II's hard disc bearings seized up.

Thanx again, HHS

Emulator

For some reason my roomate's work terminal/emulator thing only works in Internet Explorer for OS 9. The site even specifies that it will only work in classic if your on a mac. I've tried it in just about every browser for os x (Including Internet Explorer for OS X), it's a java app and it ends up just saying "applet not started" or something like that. I guess if I got an intel mac i'd have to use parallels, cuz it obviously works fine in Windows. Anyone know why this is? I know when you use it on a pc, you have to have JVM installed along with the normal java stuff.

Does that require a Classic to OS X update though?

I tried the OS X patch on a 2005 eMac, wasn't like running in OS 9. Buggy, wierd visual adnormalities. mouse sensitivity an issue, never could get it to work more than 2 days in a row.

... Anyone know why this is? ...
It is because there are some really stupid web designers out there. Some of the nitwits specify not just specific browsers but which version, but which version of specific browsers. One well-known portal specifies Netscape Communicator 4.7. Netscape Communicator 4.8 is not allowed. Neither is any newer opensource-based versions of Netscape. I am convinced that many of these Einsteins have no idea that it is possible to design a website which is accessible by more than one browser.

It's partly working, too, and apparently forever in limbo. It seems the newer the machine, the worse it works. I ran it pretty well on a blue and white G3 but a lot of people complained having trouble with it.

New iFlatMac w/N Tell won't run MacRegister or PIMS

We've got two great Mac point of sale with integrated accounting programs which call it quits past 9.2.2

PIMS has a version which runs in Xclassic; but this cute 2 GHz Intel Core Duo won't hear any of that.

P.S. We still play with 2 LISAs and a LISA II; with and w/o twiggies.
We've a museum of older software; but the machines run sooo sloooo.

Just Mike

P.S.

Any body got a 10.4 Point of Sale Program with accounting they like??

Well, I've been running Unreal Tournament in Mac OS X since the native version was released in late 2001 (I'm using version 436x3). I have only ever had it crash in one scenario (Assault: High Speed) and I haven't had that crash since back when I was using it on my iMac.

I've used it on two systems... an iMac G3/350 (with an ATI Rage 128 with 8 MB of VRAM) originally running 10.1 and later 10.2, with 256 MB, 384 MB and 512 MB of RAM. I currently play it on my Beige G3 Mini Tower (G4/533, ATI Radeon 7000 with 32 MB of VRAM) which has 640 MB of RAM and is running 10.3.

I don't care for crashing or buggy things, so that fact that I use it (at all) tells you that I don't experience difficulties with it.

In fact, it crashed a lot more back when I used it in Mac OS 9 than it ever has in Mac OS X... but of course, that was Mac OS 9.

Hmmmm... usually this is really my wife's game (I like Quake II/III personally), but just for this thread, I'll spend the next week playing this game (at least two hours a day each of those days) and report all issues (of a technical nature) that I've had with the game. I'll start out with a fresh new tournament (I think I recall which of the five saved players was mine, so I'll use that one) and we'll see how it goes.

Yes, as I recall. You install it in your classic Mac OS 9, and the Mac OS X (PPC) app references the location of the files for you.

The only thing that doesn't work properly in the OS X version is the smoke effect when you fire off grenades from the rocket launcher. But I can live with that. UT is a classic.

killing spree!

I'd suggest you have a trawl through Macintouch.com. They usually have some great suggestions for this sort of thing.

Wish someone would create an application similar to Parallels running on Mac OS X that would allow a boot into Mac OS 9.2.2 in a virtual Mac.

I would buy it in a heartbeat!

I don't want to give up my System 9 apps. Not just yet anyway.

I am still running Might and Magic III in classic envioronment. That is really a great game but 3DO is bankrupted. Didnt it?

I've got Populous II installed on my iMac G5 but don't exactly play it much. Works perfectly though.
