Hi

I have a classic mac pro (4,1 flashed to 5,1) that since upgrading to Sierra 10.12.6 has a problem where whenever I put it to sleep, the fans rev at full strength for 15 seconds about once a minute.

SMC reset helps for a while, (1 maybe 2 sleeps) but then the problem returns. Since the update, the computer has also developed a problem where if I shutdown, it restarts instead. A second shut down shutdown successfully.

Going through pmset -g log reveals DarkWake events with a frequency corresponding to the fans spinning up while the computer is asleep.

It seems that
PID 73(powerd) TimedOut InternalPreventSleep "Network wake delay proxy assertion" 00:00:30 id:0x0xd00009fd9 [System: DeclUser SRPrevSleep kCPU kDisp]

Is causing the darkwakes... but I have no idea what that process is or how to stop it.

Any help greatly appreciated, I've been through about every possible thread I can find.

Thanks!

Oliver

Until this, from a few days ago when sleep was working correctly.. after which it returns to the above (SMC reset caused it to sleep correctly for a day.)

So you have PWRB, Network, and HOST waking it up.

PWRB is power button, probably you. If the times don't coincide with you, maybe you have a flaky button.

For Network, something on the network is waking it up. Maybe its the Bonjour Network Proxy or failure to clear Bonjour cache. Try turning off every single Apple device on the network at the same time. And I mean every Apple device, not just Macs. Airports, iPhone, iPad, etc. Things like AppleTV will have to actually be unplugged.

For HOST, that could be any USB, Bluetooth, or Firewire device. That could be you (keyboard or mouse action to wake) or it could be a bad device. If it isn't you, try unplugging external devices.

Nothing definitive, but here's the steps I've taken since your last post.

PWRB wakes are me, nothing wrong there.

HOST wakes are Mighty Mouse checking in. These wakes don't cause the fan spinning up issue – the issue happens sometimes when Ive just got he wired mouse, Turning on bluetooth doesn't cause it to happen when its not been happening before – so ruling that out.

So then I thought to unplug my wireless usb adapter (should have mentioned that in OP).
Doesn't make a difference, the weird 'network wakes' continue to happen even though there's no way for the computer to connect to a network.

Which got me thinking might be a driver issue or something. Go onto amazon to look up wireless adapter and see if theres a new driver.. obviously can't find my adapter anymore.

But a lot of similar adapters with what I assume are the same chipset (Realtek RTL8811AU as that matches specs and system repot lists Productd ID 0x0811 (realtek semiconductor Corp) are listed only up to 10.12.4, and it was the upgrade from 10.12.4 to 10.12.6 that started this whole thing.

So now I'm thinking, buy another wireless adapter that's listed up to 10.13.1 or just try and install the driver from that other adapter, because I assume it's the same chipset anyway.. It'd just be great if there was a way to know what chipset my wireless adapter is using for sure?

Here's the drivers I'm thinking of downloading https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Wire...F8&qid=1513190867&sr=1-3&keywords=wireless+ac

Thanks for the update.

If a third party USB Wi-Fi adapter is suspect, you might consider getting an official Apple airport upgrade kit. In a 4,1, the antennas are already installed in place so you just need to screw in the little card and connect the antennas. You can even get third party kits that fit in the same spot, use the same antennas, use Apple native drivers supplied in MacOS, and provide BT4.0 and 802.11AC.

I wonder though why you need a wireless adapter at all if there is no network.

I'll look into, seemed expensive last time i checked but that was a while back.

Otherwise will try a better supported UBS adapter.

Either way will report back.

(The wireless adapter is being used to connect to a network.. but when its unplugged, from the computers perspective, there is no network)

Yes, the AC/BT4 kits are a bit expensive.

The official Apple airport card isn't too bad, around $26 on Amazon. But that gets you "only" up to 802.11N.

The USB gizmos are hard to beat, price wise. Compatibility is spotty though.

Since last time – bought and installed Airport card. Removed USB wifi card, uninstalled all drivers etc.

Uninstalled CUDA and Nvidia drivers since not using them any more.

reseated usb3 pci in different slot.

SMC / PRAM Reset

AHT passed

Boot into Safe mode.. Still get the problem.

But it seems I've isolated it down to a specific behavior now – waking and sleeping is working fine except when there's and external HDD..

And then it sleeps fine once, but the second time the problem begins and I can see the drive chattering (flashing) with the computer just before the Fan spins up..

Any clues? I am entirely at a loss at this point.

(Wake for ethernet accsee off, sleep HDD when possible off)

Are the wake reasons still "network"? If so, did you try turning off or removing power from all other Apple devices on the network (at the same time)?

There can be a problem with Bonjour on other Apple devices on the network can send wake-on-LAN requests to your Mac. You have to turn them all off at the same time because if the Bonjour cache is outdated or corrupt, this can spread across Apple devices.

I haven't because.. as far as I can tell there aren't any. Its possible my neighbors (who share my wifi) use some, how would I check? can't see them in Finder ..

Sorry I don't know.

I'd try z970mp's advice, especially if you have a spare drive you can test it on without disrupting your current OS install. Doing so would eliminate (or confirm) software as the problem.

Well I formatted and reinstalled the OS.

The computer is still suffering from the darkwake problem, but at least the fans don't spin up like crazy anymore.

The darkwake problem seems to be triggered by using an external USB 3.0 drive via the PCI card. (ASUS 3.1 type A –https://www.officedepot.com/a/produ...YuiRtKn05241Exph3zIbqzXLkqhjmJOwaArpdEALw_wcB)

Any ideas why a USB card would be causing sleep problems?? Or if I could install a driver that would help?

Thanks

O

Well that's odd. In the big USB thread we've been discussing Sonnet's statement that during sleep the Mac Pro cuts power to the PCIe slots. Assuming that's true, then a PCIe card shouldn't be able to wake the Mac Pro.

I suppose you could test this by plugging a mouse into the USB card and seeing if clicking its buttons will wake the Mac Pro. That would corroborate whether or not a PCIe card is capable of waking the Mac Pro.

Well, plugging the mouse in prevented the computer from sleeping properly – went into darkwake... but from that I was able to wake it by clicking the mouse.
[doublepost=1515612082][/doublepost]At this point I wander if trying a different USB 3.0 card that's known to work with 10.12.6 might be wise

Got the same problem but don't want to hijack the OPs post. if you Find out the cause, would love to know.

I had this problem suddenly out of the blue one day and it went on for days, couldn't figure out what was causing it but it only did it after I had plugged my phone into one of the front usb ports for the first time. I still to this day don't know the actual cause but I know that it stopped after turning off "Wake for ethernet connection" in the energy saver settings.
