Claude Voice Mode Gains Opus and Sonnet Model Support

Anthropic has updated Claude's voice mode to support its more powerful Opus and Sonnet models, expanding a feature that was previously limited to the company's fastest-but-simplest model, Haiku.

Voice mode lets users hold full spoken conversations with the chatbot rather than having to type prompts and read responses. Users can switch between Claude's models mid-conversation, and can also move between text and voice in the same chat without losing context. With the addition of Opus and Sonnet support, users will be able to hold longer and more complex conversations, including providing feedback on the communication style.

In addition, Claude's Voice mode can now also tap into connected tools like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack, so Claude can check a calendar or summarize an email thread out loud, for example. Users with free accounts can connect one tool, whereas paid plans support more.

According to Anthropic's support documentation, the models available in voice mode now follow the user's subscription plan, and voice conversations start on whichever model the user last selected in text chat.

Claude's voice mode language support was extended beyond English earlier this year, with French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish available in beta. Users have to manually select a language in the app.

Voice mode works on iOS, Android, desktop, and the web, but Anthropic says it is designed to work best on phones. Voice conversations count toward standard usage limits and Anthropic's newest Fable model is not yet supported.

Meanwhile, OpenAI yesterday launched ChatGPT Voice in its desktop app, powered by a model it calls GPT-Live, which the company says can direct multiple agents running in ChatGPT Work or Codex by voice alone. The feature is rolling out on macOS and Windows to paid plans.

Meanwhile, OpenAI appears to be building a real-time voice mode for its Codex agent, based on app strings uncovered by TestingCatalog. The code references checking Slack, browsing, and even ordering food while background agents handle the tasks. That feature remains in testing, however, with no confirmed model or release timing.

I've noticed Claude being more aggressive in asking for permissions to control my MacOS/iOS apps. It seems the new Siri might be rattling them quite a bit.

I like that ChatGPT can be multimodal in voice mode and do the best of both worlds, you can type and talk in the same. I like the option to type and then listen to the bot response.

There are vastly more humans about that have such biased and wild and wacky ideas of all thing.

Personally I'd prefer talking to an AI that does not have all these crazy ideas in it's head

In terms of generative, yes. But we want/need Siri for on-device control, which is why this current update is so promising.

I would much rather Siri have visibility & control over my internal files & apps than Chat/Claude/Gemini, and it's okay that Siri isn't creating AI video etc. I just want Siri to be able to accurately handle on-device and cross-device tasks. It's very easy to integrate that organizational/task behavior into one of those other platforms for the fancy stuff.

This is obviously Apple's AI / Siri strategy, and I'm a big fan of it: KISS.

E.g., I gave Claude access to my calendar and reminders yesterday to see how it does, and… it sucked. It couldn't navigate my existing folders/categories, it created the wrong reminder, and I honestly got spooked. It felt sloppy enough that things could get deleted/changed, etc.

Then I asked Siri to do the same task: create a calendar event for a specific day, and also create a reminder within that event to remind me to check prices. And it worked flawlessly. A bit slow, but otherwise seamless and accurate.

AI gets its core data and foundational knowledge from humans, so I don't know how there would be that much of a difference. When you're talking to AI, you're not talking to some alien lifeform.

I agree, What I do is use the voice option on the keyboard. I find it a good middle ground.

It's a very different thing thugh talking to an AI model.
You are talking to something that is more intelligent (or lets say has more knowledge if that's easier to go with) than any human that's ever existed on the planet.
If nothing else that is something no-one has ever been able to do up until 3 to 4 years ago.

It's wild how something that was impossible to believe could happen has flipped to just "normal" in such a short time.

Haha, if what you said to start your post was even remotely correct, I might be inclined to agree. AI has been wrong on so many basic questions, it's laughable! 😂
