As long as my phone is charged by morning I don’t care.

That said, my iPhone 12 didn’t charge this morning. It paused overnight, but never resumed charging. Rather it said it resumed, but wouldn’t actually charge until I reboot the phone. That was iOS 16, so hopefully that doesn’t happen in iOS 16.1.

I was shocked to learn this was turned on by default. This should be opt in. My phone is a vital communication device. When I decide to charge it I want it to actually charge. I turned this off.
Surprised? On you mean because Apple always advertises how eco and green it is with every keynote, so this should be naturally turned off by them?

Not.

Tap a few buttons and turn it off, easy.

It is one thing for Apple to make various marketing claims about what it does. It is another for my device to default to some setting I may not know exists and may not know is on by default.

When I plug in my device I would naturally expect it to charge. I would not expect it to “reduce my carbon footprint” and selectively charge when “lower carbon emission electricity” is available. Apple’s default setting defy user expectations for how the product they purchased should work. I wouldn’t expect my phone to communicate with power companies (who I don’t trust or wish to share data with) to see if it is OK to charge my phone.

Maybe in ten years that would be an expectation. But I expect to be undersea and drowned by then.

For now, Ive left it on, as I typically only charge it overnight while I’m sleeping. However, if at any time I wake up to an uncharged phone, or need to charge it for some other reason and it doesnt, then I will turn it off for sure.

Like Optimized Charging, you can override the should not be charging behavior:

Apple said:

If you need to override Clean Energy Charging

When Clean Energy Charging suspends charging, a notification on the Lock Screen says when your iPhone will be fully charged. If you need to have your iPhone fully charged sooner, touch and hold the notification and then tap Charge Now.

Of course, this isn’t going to be feasible when you’re sleeping. 😉

They lost this argument after adding a dongle for the new ipad 10th gen pencil. I will never again believe it.
