I've done a few clean installs of earlier macOS and OSX versions, and in all previous versions when I click install in the App Store, it results in downloading a massively large file around 5GB or 6GB which is used in the clean install process.

However, with High Sierra, doing that downloads a tiny 22.7MB file, and clicking that requires me to authorize installation. I am concerned that clicking that will start the actual upgrade process, whereas I just want to download the install file for a clean install.

Please comment.

I have raised (following few others) this issue in relevant topics. The question why it is not possible to download full installer via MAS? Is it a temporary bug or new Apple policy?

Well it IS possible because I was able to do it the normal way from within High Sierra.

However I know that others have had some difficulty in this regard recently and so you can use installinstallmacos.py to force the full download instead.

Mojave won't let you get High Sierra from within the mac app store either because it is greyed out there. But installinstallmacos.py also lets you get High Sierra from within mojave too.

I downloaded the full installer for 10.13.6 just the other day. I did it from the High Sierra page on the MAS. There is a download button in the top left.

I have found the culprit.
To download High Sierra for use with a bootable installer, be sure to download from a Mac that is currently using High Sierra, Sierra 10.12.5 or later, or El Capitan 10.11.6.
I do have Mavericks 10.9.5 and the 22 mb installer downloads the rest during installation process, which is unacceptable to me, since I wanted to make a bootable usb and keep the full installer for future use.

Did you try installinstallmacos.py?

I could download High Sierra from within the High Sierra mac app store. But my problem was that mojave doesn't even let you download high sierra at all from within the mac app store. It is greyed out there in mojave.

So I used installinstallmacos.py to get high sierra from within mojave regardless. It worked in mojave and will work in high sierra too. Haven't tried it in mavericks though. It would be interesting to see if it works there or on even earlier versions too.

No, I haven’t tried your tool yet. My Internet is not so fast I want an option with pause and resume the download. I guess that via terminal it is not possible. Those, I can always download via torrent, but it is a force-majeur option.

The 2018 rMBP installer choice isn't working for me, I'm getting the following error all the time..

Code:
installer: Error - ERROR_B14B14D9B7
Command '['/usr/sbin/installer', '-pkg', './content/downloads/28/06/091-53703/xmwnewxext02p8jj3jo2yhbyi175sg6bri/091-53703.English.dist', '-target', '/private/tmp/dmg.YUSEMK']' returned non-zero exit status 1
Product installation failed.

Maybe Apple changed one of the pathnames? Downloading generic High Sierra installer works, though..

hi. managed to dl High Sierra image per your instructions. You point to another post as how to make the bootable USB installer of HS from within Mojave, but I can't find that instruction scanning your posts. Could you please post a link to that command (as I actually read your post that the command for creating USB install media changed in Mojave). This request is specifically, creating HS bootable USB install media from with a terminal session running on DP6 Mojave.

Many thanks BTW!!!

To make a bootable usb of high sierra, format an 8 GB (or preferably 16GB) USB3 drive which should be called Untitled and formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The installer should be called Install macOS High Sierra.app and should be in your Applications folder.

Now run this in Terminal:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
