I'm trying to sell my old mac. It originally came with 10.5, but I currently have Mavericks on it and want to sell it with Mavericks, will just reinstalling wipe all of my data or do I have to erase the disk with disk utility first? If I do have to wipe it, does the restore disk still have 10.5 on it? Can I upgrade to 10.9 from 10.5? Thanks

Right so my main question is, after I reformat my HDD, am I going to get the install screen for 10.5 or 10.9? And if 10.5, is it possible to jump from 10.5 to 10.9?

If you reformat from the recovery disk, then you will be reinstalling Mavericks.

And - if you prefer to use your original restore DVD, then that will take you back to the original system (and apparently, you don't want to do that), otherwise, boot to your Recovery disk, and erase.

One big advantage - you don't need to do go looking for your original (or any other) DVD!
