Cleaning a Magsafe port

I'm noticing my magsafe port is getting very very dirty and I'm not too comfortable with that. How can I safely clean it? I bought it used and it was sorta dirty when I got it but its very dirty now.
Do I need like a cotton ball? Or one of those ear cleaning things?

I noticed this as well recently. I just used a damp cotton bud and it looks like new now:

i just dont want to hurt the port as it is magnetic

Q-tip + water and you're done. You could even use your shirt.

I imagine a soft cloth would work well. You never want to introduce moisture to any port

+1 for the Q-tip, but I prefer rubbing alcohol over water.

91% isopropyl works great. Cleaned mine right up! I would recommend turning the computer off first and unplugging the charger before doing either.
