Wow, you'll have a Blackbook almost as cheap as I got a 5,2 MacBook (2GHz 4GB RAM) (of course first thing I did was was get a three year warranty, too bad you can't :p)

thats great but 6gb in a blackbook? isnt the limit 2gb?? haha congrats it all turned out alright

The official limit is 4 GB, but the system has been proven to recognize up to 6 GB. Since it's actually a 64 bit CPU, it can handle all of it. I figure I'm going to have this computer a long time, so better get it as good as it can get.

Yeah, I'll definitely keep everyone up to date. I should get it in by the end of this week or early next week, depending on when they ship it.

whats the model number of your mac? coz id like to upgrade to at least 4gb mine is 1.1 black macbook though =/ its been 3 years but its still going strong ive upgraded to a 320gb hdd and 2gb ram, i DONT have complaints with 2gb but id feel better if it was 3 or 4 haha

again congrats bro, but make sure yours can handle 4gb :D

it can only support 2GB RAM :(

Mine is either the 3,1 or the 4,1 model. It can most definitely handle the amount of RAM I want to put in it. No question. Plus, with 6 GB RAM, when the GPU grabs RAM for itself, I still have over 4 GB RAM for the system to use, which is what I would have if it was a discrete card and I had the official max RAM in.

I'm not sure which one it is, because when I looked up the serial on Apple, it said it was the 3,1. But when I actually took it apart, it had the Penrynn layout on the logic board, which is the 4,1 model. Of course I'm hoping it's the 4,1 model, but that one came with a 250 GB drive and mine has a 160 GB in it. So I'm assuming it's the 3,1 model, but it's strange that the logic board had the Penrynn layout.

It was a refurb unit, so that may explain it.

@lokster: If you have the 1,1 model MacBook, it was introduced in May of 2006, so it's closer to 4.5 years old than 3. Mine is right about 3 years old...

wow id need an upgrade hahaha, but this little thing is still chugging along. with 320gb and 2gb of ram, ive got photoshop cs5 running on here and everything :D

Not sure if this is relavent, but when Apple replaced the hard drive in my black Macbook, they replaced it with a 160GB hard drive.. It originally had a 120 GB, so I got upgraded..

.. Perhaps Apple likes to replace hard drives with 160GB units? That might explain why you have a 160GB hard drive on a 4,1 Penryn model?

There is a grammar nazi among us. It is spelled relevant...

Well, if you want to be a nazi, you'd be a spelling nazi, not a grammar nazi.

@machewcoy: yeah, it's possible. The thing is, I can see Apple upgrading drive capacity, but not downgrading... who know? I'll find out when I get it.

Does anyone know if the MacBook has the ability to sleep without the battery? I know my PowerBook can do that for about 2 or 3 minutes so that one can change the battery without shutting off the computer... can the MacBook as well?

It can as long as the power supply is plugged in.. I'm not sure if it will without the power supply..

Well... yes, I know it will sleep without the battery if the power supply is plugged in. It will even function normally without the battery if the power supply is plugged in! ;)

My question was assuming no power supply, but I guess I neglected to mention that.

Just tried it.. The laptop shut off immediately, meaning that the "sleep light" had stopped flshing hahaha. Although, when I put the battery back in and opened the laptop and pressing the power button, it started up as if waking up from sleep.. All my open windows and running programs were still there - even Firefox with this page open.. Not sure if I would try with actual work open..

Hope that helps! :)

Interesting that it worked like that. I know on the PBG4 the light stays on... thanks for trying!

Just waiting for it to come in... supposedly they shipped it Friday and I'll get email confirmation today. If not, I'll be calling them tomorrow...

Well, I finally got it today! Snow Leopard is installed and is running updates as we speak...

Everything works, except the battery, which is so far gone that the computer doesn't even see it. Some of the keys are a little stiff from stickiness and the optical drive doesn't like to eject because the fibers are all sticky (but if I get them pointed in the right direction, it will eject enough of the disc for me to get a hold of) but that's all minor stuff compared to it not working at all before.

The place I sent it to did a great job, but they were strangely non-communicative. I never got the email with my tracking number. I'd give them 3.5-4 stars instead of 5 for that.

Now I just have to get everything transfered and all sorts of fun stuff.

Anybody have a good idea of how to clean the keyboard? It's still sticky from the spill and getting quite difficult to type on. On the keyboard on my windows computer when this happened (it's also a laptop) I simply took the keyboard out and ran it under hot water and didn't connect it until it was very, very dry. It worked like a charm... any reason why it wouldn't work here as well?

I wouldn't run it under water.. That just seems like a bad idea.. It may work, but then again, why risk it.. I personally take eye-glass cleaning solution (sunglass cleaning solution, it's all the same) and spray it on a terry-cloth or microfibre cloth, and then wipe down the keyboard/topcase, screen, the whole laptop.. I like keeping mine nice and clean since I have oily hands haha

Glad to see the laptop is working out for you!

Yeah, after some searching around, I found a thread on how to pop off the keys and then clean them out. It seems to work pretty well, and I did about half the keyboard last night. This morning, most of the keys still click well, though the space bar still has some slight resistance.
