Clear all iMessage data

Hi, I've got an iPad Air (first gen) and trying to clear some space before a trip tomorrow. My data usage shows Messages taking up 1.6GB but I've deleted all the messages and turned off iMessage in Settings. Am I missing something to clear that out?
