Clearing iMessage icloud storage

I own two apple devices; an iPhone 8 Plus and and iPad Pro with iMessage in use on both.
I regularly delete all conversations on both in order to save space, but I noticed this strange thing when I access "Manage Storage" under iCloud; it tells me that iMessage is taking up almost one gigabyte of storage!

How do I clear this space?
