Not to mention both articles were written about a Pentagon report. We all know how liberal the Pentagon is!

Keep in mind this is coming from a defense perspective, so it is a "worst case scenario" report. Regardless, it raises some valid concerns.

C'mon, you dont really believe that, do you? You really want your family and friends to die?

Our society is slowly [note: very slowly] learning how to live more harmoniously with nature, but its not something thats going to happen overnight. (Better fuel systems with less reliance on burning fossil fuels, etc) On the other hand, its also not something that is going to wipe us off the planet by 2020.

Both extremes are just that: extremes. People who scream about environmental issues every time election year rolls around, and the people who could care less and dump gasoline in their front lawn are both wrong. The society as a whole needs to constantly and consistently improve our world without causing grief and chaos in the meantime.

true, but we've got a long way to go and do a lot of growing before we have world peace and harmony with nature.

We're way too immature socially to responsibly handle and prevent problems. Understanding that we all live on the planet together, holding power over others causes tension and strife, resources need to be conserved and farmed, not exploited....and the list goes on, will get us closer to a peaceful existence.

I know I'm not going to be around to see it come to fruition and we'll be lucky not to blow ourselves up before we get there.

Yeah, unfortunately we'll kill ourselves off long before nature kills us. I think thats an inevitable, unavoidable truth. As long as humans find better was of making bigger weapons, there will always be some idiot plotting to push the button.

It continues to amaze me that folks can be so blinded by the right (or left, for that matter) that they can't even consider for one second that even with an overwhelming amount of data that shows some serious issue COULD pop up, isn't even worth a little brain power to see if it's possible. Carumba. Well, why? Because blaming it on liberals takes no brain power. I mean really, try turning off Limbaugh and Hannity once and a while ya freak.

thats not what i said. i was saying that if we kill ourselves, its no great loss. we overestimate ourselves - and thats a big part of the problem.

Others have said that even if there are no environmental consequences, we only have a few decades of oil left. What will your children use to fuel their cars and heat their homes??

...the problem might not be when oil runs out, but when cheap oil runs out. Remember what happened when the oil price went up in the 70's ? Global economic crisis, thank you.

Look up the term 'peak oil' on google for full info on the theory. In a nutshell, it means that the cost of getting oil follows a bell curve. Very expensive at first (initial cost of research and equipment) it gets cheaper until it becomes less abundant and requires more work to get to. Some experts say this phenomenon can be observed locally, but the model fits the worldwide production as well. And the scary part: we should be pretty close to the peak of the curve, if not already past it...

Whatever the numbers, we are talking some serious changes in OUR lifetime already. There is always been change, the world 'of comfort' (generalization of the western world) is very recent. Humanity will most certainly survive, but the current growth is not sustainable, so we all know something is going to happen sooner or later...there is probably not much we can do about it, but ignoring the problem will only make things worse.

ok, enough doom theory for one evening
;)

I sometimes wondered where we could be in the research and knowledge of regenerative power resources if all that money spend for the gulf war would have been spended instead for research ?

Maybe Mrmacman has read the sceptical enviromentalist. I haven't read the book myself but i heard the author didn't even know what a green house gas actually does.

the sky is falling

This article is ridiculous...

Okay, I found a secret document from high in the US government from credible scientists that says the world will end in twenty years.... and then, I write an article about it... but I only mention this secret document at the beginning.. and the rest is an attack on Bush, his war on terror, the election, and a bunch of other non-important stuff.

I laughed outloud when I read the line:

So dramatic are the report's scenarios, Watson said, that they may prove vital in the US elections.
Okay, the world is ending.. shouldn't you be focusing on that? Why is 75% of this article about Bush's politics? This article makes no sense at all. Completely ridiculous.

I think the point is that Bush is the lead guy of a group of pretty powerful guys and gals called Americans.

If all this is true then what can we do about it? Well I don't think there's much I can do about it but there might be something that the President of the United States of America can do, but it won't happen unless the he acknowledges that it might possible could be a problem. What does he know that most of the scientific community don't?

The original article has unfortunately been picked up by a lot of various news sources, but it *is* full of lies, and it *does* appear to be just an excuse to attack the Bush administration.

There is NOTHING secret about the Pentagon document. I downloaded it a month ago from Fortune's website...
