Hey guys!

I have plans to buy the upcoming Mac Mini M1X, that will be released in this fall.

I have an iMac 27" Late 2015 (running macOS Monterey beta) and wonder if it is possible to create a clone of this iMac using Carbon Copy Cloner and then copy over the clone to the new Mac Mini? Can it clone an Intel Mac to a Mac with ARM Processor?

What I could read on the CCC website so would version 6.0.2 handle both Intel and ARM, this is true?

Have anyone tried this with a successful result?

CCC by default only copies the data volume now, but it will still work fine as the source for an import into your new Mac. It won't matter that one is Intel and one is ARM.

You'd do better to just keep maintaining the "data clone" (via CCC).

When the new Mini comes, use setup assistant and let it migrate from the clone to the new Mac.

Chances are, the OS on the new M1x may have slight differences than the copy of Monterey you are using now, which means your original cloning plan won't work.

Ok, so if I clone my Intel Mac (without including the OS) to an external disk using setup assistant and then copy this clone to the new Mac ARM, will all my applications settings also be on the new Mac?

By default, CCC no longer copies the OS under Big Sur and Monterey, so you will only have the data volume. That will include all your personal data along with apps. You don't need to OS as part of CCC, since it will already be on the new Mac.

I'm assuming by the time this happens the new Mac you buy will come with Monterey and you will have upgraded your old Mac to the final release version of Monterey.

So no more bootable clones? That would be unfortunate.

There is sort of a work around using CCC, but it is a pain and then after you make the bootable clone CCC cannot update the OS volume on the clone since it is a "sealed" volume. So every time a point update comes out you have to manually make a new clone. Most CCC users I have seen discussing this don't bother trying to keep up with the OS clones any longer.

Thanks for your answer and a good explanation! 😀
