I'm looking for a cloning app that will make daily clones of my HD to a backup drive. I don't want to keep the backup drive permanently mounted. Can anyone recommend an app that can automatically mount the backup drive, run a scheduled backup, then unmount the drive?

Carbon Copy Cloner can do that. You can also run shell scripts before and after. For bootable clones that could be useful to kill the Launch Services database afterwards.

As Ebenezum already answered your question and I've never used SuperDuper, I just can bring in another thread where we've been discussing differences between SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner. The primary advantage of CCC seems to be the ability to handle the Recovery Partition as well. All other features appear to be quite similar.
