Closed App still appears in the "select open app" menu

Hi, hopefully this is an easy one or someone can just tell me that I should get over what I am used to expecting from windows as I'm a n00b.

After I close an app (Chrome and iTunes) they seem to close but when I select a new open by by command+tab or three finger swipe, the closed app is still in the menu and when I select it, it does open up the app window, just changes the task bar...

Is this normal? Or is it a bug somewhere...

You didn't close the app, you closed one or all of its windows. It's still running. Hit command-q to quit or quit from the pull down menu or by right clicking on the app in the dock and choosing quit.
