Do you have a hp device installed? It looks to be the software for that that's had a little fart. Nothing to worry about. If it keeps happening update all the relivant software

I'd check out ClamXav

As for the kernel panic, a single crash may not be problematic, but if it continues, then something is causing the problem, could be hardware, could be software. I't might be the HP stuff, so if you start seeing more KPs, then trying uninstalling the HP software and/or disconnecting the HP from your Mac.

Yeah... try out ClamXAV like maflynn suggested. It just sits there and is on demand, unlike Avast that installs all that junk.

You school needs better understanding of how computers and the internet works, and you need to get rid of Avast if you can.

Would you recommend Avira instead? ClamXav is a commercial product now

There's nothing wrong with ClamXav because its commercial. In fact I still recommend that, I've not heard of Avira. Go with a known product with a good track record. Why not reward the developer and pay him for his work :)

How does the school define anti-virus? I abandoned anti-virus some years ago after realising it was a troublesome waste of resources, and since then I have relied on caution supplemented by Malwarebytes to deal with trojans etc. If your school would accept Malwarebytes as sufficient - and it is, especially on a Mac - then that might be an answer.

The thing is that my school forces me to install one of the three antivirus softwares they have listed in order to connect to the wifi, so it's either Avast or Avira for me. I don't know if their "system" will recognize ClamXav or not. I know, it's ridiculous.

I think I answered your response in my first reply above :)

Avira is a known product with a good track record.

Their market share in North America seems to be relatively small though, so no wonder you've never heard of them. On this side of the pond they're a household name.
