Closing an individual window, like an email

Coming from Windows, if I am reading an email in an individual window, I can press ESC to close just that individual email window.
On macOS, ESC does not work. Is there a shortcut I can use to close said window? Thanks

Or just look at all the menu items in the application you're using and see what the keyboard shortcut is for each menu item that has one.
