I want to be able to use my MBP with an external display. I read the instructions on the apple website but It does not seem to work. is there an easier way? I'm totally new to macs so...

Here's how I do it:

1. Power on the MBP and hook it up to an external monitor. At this point, it should either extend the desktop onto the external monitor or mirror the two desktops (depending on your settings). Either one is fine; it doesn't matter.

2. Make sure you have a USB keyboard and mouse plugged into your laptop (Bluetooth may work, but I'm not sure about that).

3. Close the lid of your laptop and let it go to sleep.

4. Move the attached mouse or hit a key on the keyboard to wake it up. It should now work and display only on the external monitor.

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse will work. In order to wake the computer and display it on an external display, make sure your computer is plugged into power. You should be good to go.
