My opinion is that not every person needs to create a new thread of their interpretation of the invitation Apple sent out this week, so when I reported those threads I always suggested they be merged with a current thread that was already in progress with 2-3 pages worth of replies.

On friday night their were 5 threads of people reporting the same 9to5mac article of AT&T adding iPhone 5 cases to their inventory system, and MacRumors had the same story on the front page. 6 threads of people discussing the same topic just creates clutter, so I agree that 5 of those 6 threads should be closed or merged so that we can all have a unified discussion.

Topics like these have all been discussed countless of times by now, why can't people just join a current thread?

  • What to expect on Oct 4th (their are current 3 threads on this subject on page 1 of the forum)
  • More iPhone 5 cases appear
  • Why I think their will be no iPhone 5
  • What do you prefer, iPhone 4S or iPhone 5?
  • When will it be available?

...
It's kind of a non-written policy that we close redundant future product threads. You don't need to start a new thread for your opinion as we all have our 2 cents anyway. Unless the thread adds something new to the discussion, there isn't a need to keep it alive...

It's actually a written policy - it falls under the duplicate thread rule. Sometimes people don't bother searching first, so the thread they start might already be covered elsewhere. When that happens and our attention is brought to it, we merge them, or sometimes move posts from the new thread into the first thread.

Ill just go to every thread I deem pointless and repeated and post this "Pointless thread, reported" and report it.

Don't post in it... just report it

MacDawg is absolutely right - don't post "useless thread" or "reported". Those posts are off-topic and have to be cleaned up, so you're in effect only creating more work for the moderators. But do report them, that's a huge help.

Ah, thats funny... I reported one, you went in and deleted my post but not the thread. Yeah, that report button really works...

See the last part of the post right above yours ... when a member posts "reported," it must be deleted for being off-topic, in addition to any other action taken or not taken in the thread.

Yes but you did nothing to the bad thread...oh well.

You seem to be confused about the difference between "reporting a post" and the moderators "moderating a post." They are not the same thing. Reporting brings it to moderator attention. Moderating implies that the forum staff has found rules that were broken and made the necessary effort to remove or otherwise fix it.

Since the original thread was unchanged, either debate about which rules were broken is still taking place, or nothing was deemed inappropriate about the thread.

Oh it was a repeat...so I reported it and here comes the inconsistency EVEN WITH A REPORT! Haha...

If you mean a duplicate thread, did you include the link of the other thread?

Also when the moderators receive a duplicate thread reported post, we sometimes determine that the threads are different enough to keep them both.

Also let me touch upon your complaint of inconsistency. The moderators are human (which some of you might disagree :p ) and being as such we have differing viewpoints. Many complaints are not simple cut and dry issues. The human element is always going to produce differing results.

We all strive to work as a team and be consistent but expecting 100% consistency on a board of this size is not easily attainable.

^Plus a report does not mean that something visible will be done to the thread. Many moderation actions are private and hence only visible to us and the actual user. Sometimes there is no need for any actions, but that doesn't mean you should stop posting reports.
