Clubhouse, the online audio app that has become a social sensation, has reportedly surpassed eight million iOS App Store downloads, according to data from App Annie (via TechCrunch).

The app, best described as a place to hold public group FaceTime-like audio calls, is currently iOS exclusive, although an Android counterpart is in the works. The app requires users to be invited to the app to use it, making it somewhat exclusive for users who are lucky enough to have an account. The data from App Annie shows that as of February 1, the app had obtained 3.5 million downloads. A little more than two weeks later, that number more than doubled to 8.1 million.

Estimates beyond App Annie indicate that downloads for the app could be as high as 10 million. The significant uptick in downloads could be attributed to appearances on the app by Tesla founder Elon Musk, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Clubhouse, when contacted for comment on the statistics by TechCrunch, says that it doesn't disclose user numbers.

Didn't know what to expect. But had a great time meeting and sharing information within multiple categories I'm professionally and personally interested in. No need to schedule meetings or webinars. Just drop in whenever you got time. I'm a big fan so far.

I might be in the minority, but I actually like it. It's like podcasts but with a lot more interactivity and personal interaction. And sure a lot of features are missing (better schedules, saved podcasts and so on), but people need to remember it's a startup, not a finished company.

So they reinvented AM talk radio. People say it's like podcast, but more interactive. The only relationship to podcasts is that it's audio. There is no way to time shift or speed up. I'm waiting for someone to start playing music, then they'll have reinvented FM radio.

I think part of the cool factor now is that high profile people join every once in awhile. But does anyone think that will really last? High profile people are busy and their time maps directly to big dollars.

What could make it useful is if it can become a free content generation platform. People get together and talk, it's recorded, transcribed, and indexed. Basically an audio message board.

So then with people your interested in ... it's a drop in the pond whether or not they're "in" a video for you to listen to or join into right? IF nobody is there you'd be non-the-wiser or are you somehow notified?

invite please?

I can't imagine why I would would want this. I don't like talking to people I know on the phone....
I haven't used it, but my understanding is you should think of it more like radio. 99.99% of people should be joining to listen, not to talk. They might take audience questions or something like calling into a show, but mostly you're joining to hear Elon Musk be interviewed by Joe Rogan or have a conversation with Putin.

So it's "somewhat exclusive" and "invite only", but has 8 million downloads?
You can download it, and that still would count, but that doesn't mean you can use the app, unless you have an invite.

I doubt there are actually 8 million active users, at least half of them downloaded the app just to see it and maybe they didn't know it's invite only. Nowhere in the article, it says how many users are in, just how many people downloaded the app.
