It mostly sucks because the interface sucks; but once you randomly just happen to find an interesting room up and running it sucks less. It's the people that matter.

When will Apple ban the App because certain channels on Clubhouse are not OK with Apple?
Sadly China caught up to the blocking game rather quickly:

Clubhouse, the online audio app that has become a social sensation, has reportedly surpassed eight million iOS App Store downloads, according to data from App Annie (via TechCrunch).

The app, best described as a place to hold public group FaceTime-like audio calls, is currently iOS exclusive, although an Android counterpart is in the works. The app requires users to be invited to the app to use it, making it somewhat exclusive for users who are lucky enough to have an account. The data from App Annie shows that as of February 1, the app had obtained 3.5 million downloads. A little more than two weeks later, that number more than doubled to 8.1 million.

Estimates beyond App Annie indicate that downloads for the app could be as high as 10 million. The significant uptick in downloads could be attributed to appearances on the app by Tesla founder Elon Musk, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Clubhouse, when contacted for comment on the statistics by TechCrunch, says that it doesn't disclose user numbers.

Is it so exclusive you can’t even give a brief description of what the app even is?

What I don’t get is it’s like a podcast, just less convenient. You can’t rewind or save things. You’re more likely to join in the middle of the session.
The difference is that Clubhouse offers a way for you to interact with those on the stage and participate in the podcast. It has actually been a really cool app and experience so far for me.

Huh. That is interesting. At first I assumed it would be a weird, dark, gross chat room but with people actually talking instead of typing. But if there are different categories to choose from this may be cool! I’d love to see if any of my hobbies or pet projects are on here.

In short, it is an audio only social networking platform You can join rooms where speakers are on a stage talking, or you can start your own room for a given topic. It's podcast style but allows interaction from the audience. You can follow different clubs based on your interests so that you're taking part in things that interest you.

I do not get the appeal of this app. I hate phone calls. I especially hate conference calls. I've only just started listening to selected podcasts. Sitting on a group audio call for entertainment? As a "social" activity? No thanks.

Also, Clubhouse is rife with security and privacy issues:

You can download it, and that still would count, but that doesn't mean you can use the app, unless you have an invite.

I doubt there are actually 8 million active users, at least half of them downloaded the app just to see it and maybe they didn't know it's invite only. Nowhere in the article, it says how many users are in, just how many people downloaded the app.
As long as you're in the correct group think..? Heh

Tried it and dislike it. Just one more social media app vying for your attention. Chats are often unfocused rambling. This is only popular because it's the shiny, new app that everyone's talking about.

Maybe that'll change in future iterations. One can only hope. As is, I played around with it for two days, but haven't gone back since.

What is novel about this? It’s hype and mirrors. Z-berg is toxic. I wouldn’t be touting his association with anything.

Nope, not even close, as you still need to get invited to get in; and the contact list-sucking up doesn't begin until then (and you let them).

I use Clubhouse, but would NEVER let them access my address book.

You probably don’t have to, they just interpolate it from others that follow the default and allow access.

Extremely few have my number (as I'm sort of internet-first); so no worries like that.

Besides, I'm very much aware about what's going on on the inside of these businesses; so I only make educated compromises when I join new services.
