I'm using 10.8 and have a 500GB External Drive which is a complete mess in terms of structure with in excess of 2000 sub-directories and file types embedded into every corner.

This is what I want to do;

Copy all JPGs (from all sub folders) from one external drive to my new 2TB external drive into sub directories created from the "created date stamp".

Then same as above for other file types MOV, MP3, DOC etc into just one sub directory on the new external drive for the relevent extension type.

Do I need to use Shell / Terminal, Finder or a standalone program ?

Any help would be appreciated as I've been tearing my hair out for months trying to get my head around it.

Just use Finder and a Spotlight search...or leave it as is and set up a few smart folders.
