Since yesterday, my cMP has had three crashes , and I'm wondering if you could give me some assistance with finding the issue .

On all occassions, my two displays have suddenly gone completely blank during use .

One time both displays were white ; once the left one was white with red artifacts, the right one white ; the last time the left monitor was white, left one grey ( see attachment ) .

The system was frozen, didn't react to keyboard input, and I had to do forced shutdowns .

I've been researching and reading through console entries for hours now - not knowing much about those things - but can't seem to find a place to even start looking for the problem .

After the third time, a crash report to Apple popped up which I'll post below .

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Did you checked your northbridge heatsink, on the CPU tray, to see if the nylon rivets are ok? It’s a common problem after all these years.

Thanks for pointing that out .

In the meantime, I've been doing the most simple thing and reattached all the display connectors and adapters .
One DVI connection had a loose nut on it, a common issue that had caused me graphic glitches in the past , but ususally that resulted only in artifacts and not system freezes .

No crashes since - knocking on wood .

Well, my GPU has been working again for a little while, but it seems like now it's gone for good .

After having a few crashes in a short period of time - trying to play a game - the R9 280X won't even start up to anything but a distorted output and or blank screen .

I also tried it on my old MP 3.1, with a different monitor, on DVI and miniDP , and it's the same issue ( see attached images ) .
Two old GPUs, an 8800GT and Radeon 5770, work just fine on my MP 5.1 ; so at this point I assume the R9 280X is at fault .

As I want to keep running Mavericks 10.9.5 for a little longer, but Metal support would be nice for the future too, my options for a decent replacement card seem to be limited .

Another R9 280X would be possible - but my further research has brought up possible power issues in cMPs , which might have had to do with the demise of my current R9 280X .

Or, the Nividia GTX 780 (3GB or 6GB , non Ti/Titan ) is apperantly Mavericks ( and Metal ) compatible as well and easier on the power supply .

Flashed GTX 780 3GB are around 200-250 Euros right now over here, same as a flashed R9 280X .

Any thoughts or recommendations ?

If you're planning to make the jump to Mojave in the future, the r9 280x would be a good candidate as would the gtx780. As there are Apple nvidia drivers for Kepler based GPUs, the 780 should work with Mojave as well. 280x can be flashed to have an Apple ROM which has its benefits.

Depends on what your workflow situation is, but Nvidia is at the end of the road at present with Apple, unless they release new web drivers for use in Mojave. Both cards are quite decent. Many would recommend an RX580 (me included), which would be ideal and future proof you, but not sure what the cost or availability is in Germany at present. Also, its a far better GPU than both offerings you suggested.

If you have to stay with Mavericks, the RX580 is out of the question. Updating your OS would help open the door to more GPU choices, but if you're running older software that was never updated I get the hesitation to change.

The R9 280X is a nice card, Perhaps it was not EFI flashed properly. Have you thought about going over to to the Netkas thread http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,5619.0.html to learn how to re-flash it ? 45 pages - read ALL of them, make notes, work slowly, methodically - as we did as novices.
I recommend the Gigabyte R9 280X as it is a two PCIe slot card and will allow you to use PCIe slot 2. for other hi-performance PCIe cards or perhaps even an IOcrest M.2 NVME SSD adapter.

I plan to get the Gigabyte card next month.

Thanks for the replies , guys !

I will look into bringing the R9 280X back to life, but won't put too much effort into it .
As you said, it's obsolete in many respects - still worked well enough for my needs .

I use a number of programs and hardware that are not supported or don't work well in an OS later than Mavericks, I don't really miss much apart from a more current Safari, GPU power is not a major issue for my work - and I'm a bit lazy ...
A secondary setup is running High Sierra, but I'll wait for the future MP before moving my entire workflow over to the latest OSX version .

Hence I figured I'd best stick with a GPU that gives me the choice of using anything from Mavericks to Mojave, for the time being .

The R9 280X ran without any issues for a year and a month - one month beyond the warranty I got from the refurbishing shop I bought my used MP 5.1 with the 280X from ...

Fortunately, the vendor has has been very accomodating when I contacted them - they are sending me a flashed GTX 780 3GB at half price . Kudos to mac-factory , they had no obligation to do that .

GTX 580 is capable and if you're not needing the horsepower gpu wise. Decent of them to send a replacement for sure! Glad to help. Maybe the 280X need a repaste and reflash. Hopefully it didn't cook itself.
