I don't think it's a secret. I think that we knew that when he took over for Steve Jobs.

Isn't Tim Cook's sexuality Silicon Valley's worst kept secret? I didn't think the revelation that he's gay is anything new, not that it matters.

It's sort of obvious, but it was still wrong for the host to do that when Tim Cook has never publicly acknowledged his sexuality.

Unfortunately I think there will be more and more pressure for Cook to come out. I don't like it. If Cook wants to keep his private life private that should be his choice. Screw Kara Swisher and everyone else who want him out.

...and, of what possible relevance is his affectional preference to ANYTHING!

Not relevant to his job at all, but the fact that one of the most powerful CEOs in the world is gay could be an inspiration to gay teens who are constantly being bullied and feel like they'll never amount to anything. Same reason Michael Sam is such a big deal.

Could he over enunciate any more? That voice is, so annoying. Also apple's a pretty liberal company I would think that most of there customers are for gay rights. And the irony of having Religious people saying that he's going to hell, then pulling out there iPhone's will be funny.

We may see the resurgence of my second favorite apple logo:

Wow... I have honestly never connected the possibility of Tim Cook being gay. Never crossed my mind until I read this thread. Well... if it's true, it sure hasn't been a burden on his success.

Google and Microsoft have also come out strongly for gay rights. If any Apple customers want to leave over it, they'll have nowhere else to go. The bigots will have to go back to Stone Age technology to match their Stone Age beliefs ;)

    Tim Cook "outed" on MSNBC?

This is just blowing up right now:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JxT7i4H9N4

I was surprised to see the headlines about this. These stories are saying he's never "officially" come out, but isn't it pretty common knowledge? I certainly have no personal or special knowledge about Tim Cook or his personal life but have "known" that he is gay since he took over as Apple's CEO. I mean, I get the significance of outing someone (rather than letting them come out on their own terms) -- I just didn't realize Cook's sexuality would be news to anyone!

I saw this. How is it outing him if many people already knew about it and he was rated as one of the most influential LGBT people by some magazine last year?

Personally, I just hope his second toe isn't bigger than his first. Now that is something which would deeply affect my opinion on Mr. Cook. Also, does anybody know what race(s) he is? There may be a few in there that really get my goat!

Right, exactly. I feel like almost any regular on this forum or anyone who follows apple news would know this. I certainly wouldn't have classified it as a secret! He's spoken before about experiencing discrimination in his career, and since he's a white (christian, I think) male, it's pretty clear what he meant. But apparently he's never actually officially acknowledged his sexuality.

I guess the tech community and gay community knew about it, but apparently it's never been mentioned on mainstream media. Now everyone will know. I wonder how many bigots will come out of the woodwork to add Apple to their gay-friendly boycott list.

Bahahaha, that would be fantastic; more :apple: products for people who aren't bigots. Sometimes hate hates its hateful self in such a hateful way that everything works out for the best.

Just because someone hasn't had an opportunity to indicate they're gay doesn't mean they're closeted. Some people have a nothing to hide, nothing to show approach. If it comes up incidentally, then it does. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Ideally I think that's how it will be eventually, rather than being an event. Like, "Oh, you have blue eyes. Never noticed before, huh" type thing.

Who cares? Being black, white, green, purple , straight, gay, atheist, catholic, pagan, etc isn't an issue anymore. He's the CEO of one of the most influential companies on the planet. He could be the giant purple people eater for all anyone cares. It...DOESN'T...**********...MATTER ANYMORE!!!

Let them boycott. Good luck finding a tech company that isn't supportive of equal rights.

Yep. There aren't any. And in all honesty the guy who outed him probably reads tech sites regularly and accepted this as a fact long ago, and therefore didn't even think twice before saying it.

I can't wait until the world stops obsessing over gays. Why do we care if people are gay or not? Why do people have to come out? If Tim Cook wants to keep his private life private, that's his choice.

The world will stop "obsessing over gays", as you so ineloquently put it, when there is no need to subvert bigotry and societal presumptions anymore. Until then, they'll live happily and obviously, knowing it irks juuust the right people.

I don't give much thought to anyone's sexual preference.

Does it have any impact on my life or my iPhone? Nope.

People have too much time on their hands.

And "outing" is pretty disgusting and intrusive. People should mind their business. If people wanted their sex life to be a public issue they should be allowed to handle it personally on their terms.

I already knew he was gay. Not that it should be an issue at all.
