As i'm who looking for a new iMac and feel that current kabylake iMac doesn't meet my requirement, when not afford to buy a new iMac pro. it seem next iMac will be next big thing for me.

- 6 core i5-8400 will be standard low end configuration. (20000 geekbench)
- 12thread i7-8700k will be definitely on the list. (25000 geekbench)
- There are the possibility that 8 core will be in for iMac too. (canonlake)
- Faster of same RX570, 580 GPU performance.

I think thre are many ppl who are in same situation with me, So i'm open this thread for them.

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat too... It's a totally frustrating situation on my end as I want to buy an iMac now, but then I want to have it for at least 5 years. So if there really is a Coffee Lake refresh in June I'm considering waiting until then because the bumps in speed would certainly make it worth it (as opposed to marginal 10-15% gains we've been seeing in recent years) and would make the iMac more future-proof. Plus 6-core CPUs would make the current 4-core CPUs instantly obsolete.

Question is, would there really be a refresh in the summer 2018? If so, would they include the new cooling system from the iMac Pro? And consequently, would they also idiotically seal it to prevent the users to upgrade the RAM themselves?!

I doubt, however, that they would include 8-core processors, though. After all 8-core is inside the base model of iMac Pro so I'd think they wouldn't want to meddle with it.

Im wondering what a work that a 4.2ghz quad core kabby lake i7 isnt able to do but a cannon lake imac would do?
I have no idea how mucb more power ful the next gen imac will be but I dont think they will Be a game changer i mean It wont give you 80percebt more performance and Unless you neeed crazy computing power The 4.2ghz i7 is a Pretty capable cpu

IMO, the best possible cpu which can be put in kabylake imac is ONLY 8 theads cpu, while the next iMac you MAY Be can put 16 threads cpu, which will be huge in next generations of apps.

it is a same situation as buying 13" dual-core mbp, when everybody know 4 core is around the corner. (may be with same money)

Capable but runs very hot.

The i5-8400 that may be offered in an iMac next year would be about as fast in multi-threaded applications as the i7-7700K, but would run much cooler and quieter.

No 16-thread iMac non-Pro next year. 12 yes but 16 is a definite no.

im an owner of the 2017 5k imac (almost maxed out 16gb ram 3tb fusion i7 4.2ghz radeon pro 580) i must admit its not the quietest machine ever but right now im typing this on the imac and it makes NO audible noise and the hard drive is very silent
and i can almost max out games of 2016-17 like wwii 1440p with those outdated bootcamp drivers considering they just released an imac pro and in my opinion the next big release would be the rMBP you will have to wait a long long time and youre not even sure of how much it would cost or how much better it will be so what i would recommend is get the 2017 model and dont go with fusion drive unless you need 2-3tb internal avoid it if you can i needed that and well its almost ssd fast in booting up and everything works smooth (other than some wierd scrolling lag in logic x)
this machine is really worth 3000usd
its your choice bro but i would say buy it unless you really need something really stronger

Yes, if you aren’t doing anything strenuous on the 4.2 GHz i7 7700K, it will be quiet.

Export a video though and the fans go to max in 30 seconds. I found that really irritating, so I returned mine and got an i5.

IMO, it 8core non-pro is possible but not definitely. because of:

1 in Q1 2018 AMD will launch optimized zen which may outclass all 6 core intel lineup. So it made intel to do something.
2 There are widely known rumors about mainstream intel 8 core.

So IMO, 8 core part for intel is possible coming. next year, and now its up to apple to put it in non pro.

PS. if there are 8 core part non pro the price lineup will be perfectly align.

4c/4t i3 $1600
6c/6t i5 $2300
6c/12t i7 $2800
8c/12t i9 $3500
8c/12t imac pro $5000
