My mother and step-father moved to a small town in Alabama a couple of years ago. They have lived in three other towns since they moved away from Memphis, TN, about 28 years ago.

Well, last year, a couple moved into the new house next door to them. My parents went over to meet them, and sat down to chat. After a while, my mother and the wife from the other couple realized that they knew each other when they were teenagers (50-60 years ago). My mother used to ride horses, and rode at a stable with this woman's brother.

But, it didn't stop there. They kept chatting, and found out that my parents' son-in-law was this woman's acupuncturist in Memphis.

Two completely random connections from one person.

  1. About a year ago, I was dating somebody who brought up reading Alison Bechdel's graphic memoirs and how interesting it was given the psychological analysis she performs on herself as she wrote a book about psychological analysis of herself.
  2. At the time, I was also housesitting for a couple of friends and found Bechdel's Fun Home and Are You My Mother? on a shelf.
  3. I was doing an info crawl on the development of one of my favorite cartoon characters, the protagonist of MTV's Daria, and learned she is modeled after cartoonist Lynda Barry. In an image search for Lynda Barry, Google also returned a photo of Alison Bechdel as the 18th result.
  4. My favorite band tweeted a congratulatory shoutout to a friend who had worked on the stage adaptation of Fun Home.
  5. MacRumors posted an article about Scott Forstall's involvement in the aforementioned production. It was Forstall's initial graphic direction that endeared the Macintosh operating system to me; I'm a sucker for skeuomorphism and photorealistic UI.

Small story from undergrad...

I used to live in NJ when I went to elementary school. In the middle of 4th grade, we abruptly moved up North and I lost touch with everyone.

Fast forward to about 8 years later, I went to my college orientation and became good friends with this one guy.

2 months later, I moved in and went to his dorm to say hi. As I was walking down the hallway to his room, I run into one of my good friends from when I lived in New Jersey. He was living next door to my friend from orientation. Hadn't seen him in over 8 years. Ended up living with him for the next 3 years in undergrad.

Then few hours later, we were all getting dinner in the dining hall. I ran my old neighbor from NJ in the line. He lived a few houses down from me and we used to ride our bikes together.

It's a small world out there!
