It looks like the 1995 World Rally Champion, Colin McRae has been killed in a helicopter crash in Scotland.

It is a sad day for motorsport if this is the case.

Confirmed by the Telegraph (Link)

Terrible loss, along with his 5 year old son.

Thought go to his wife and daughter.

Colin McRae Feared Dead!

Rally driver Colin McRae and three others are feared dead in a helicopter crash near his Lanarkshire home.

Not good news to wake up to. :(

EDIT: I'm slow again.

Why 'feared' have they not recovered bodies yet ? Surely his family know if he is missing and was on the copter or not ?

Either way sad news. :(

Such a shame. Pretty sure its him now as even his manager hasn't contacted him.

In such a short space of time we have lost Richard Burns and now Colin McRae, two of the best British Rally drivers ever.

Sad day for British Motorsport.

Don't forget Michael "beefy" Park, in 2005, as well.

Yup, it's terrible. And Steve Fossett too (although officially he's still "missing").

:(

Every pay your respects to Colin McRae. He was a legend of rallying and motor sport as a whole and loved for his go for it attitude. He will be sorely missed by a lot of people with this unfortunate loss.

McRae's ex-Subaru boss, Dave Richards has just walked away from a helicopter crash on his way back from todays Belgian GP.

That's it, I'm never getting in a helicopter in my life. When a plane has engine failure, it can presumably still glide to an emergency landing. When a helicopter has engine failure, it turns into a free-falling steel coffin.

Auto rotating(What a helicopter does if it has an engine failure...), although not as simple as gliding, can be achieved if you can get the helicopter to descend fast enough. The trick is to keep air moving across the blades so that they can keep there momentum and keep spinning. I think it involves disengaging the prop shaft from the engine. Basically I'm just saying that there are methods to survive in a helicopter. Hope to see you in the air again soon :p

This was one of the biggest shocks for me. It's always hard to lose a hero. Our thoughts have to be with his family and friends especially because his only son died too.
He has done more for rallying than anyone, he was a household name and when Valentino Rossi dedicates his win to Colin we realise how involved Colin was in all sports. He was a the most famous of rally drivers. He won just 1 championship though he deserved so much more. One of the Best Ever. Its hard to lose him after Richard Burns, "Paying tribute to Burns after his death, McRae said: "He was a true character in the world of rallying and will be sadly missed."

Those words apply equally to McRae himself.

I will remember him alongside Burns, Michael Park, Richard Sainct, Fabrizio Meoni, Andy Coldecott and even Senna and Earnhart on road. All great motorsports men who died in their prime.

All weekend long my boys and I raced against his AI in DiRT for the PS3. We had a blast. Then we saw this on the news this morning. Tragic :(
