You found a MBP for $800 and you didn't even stop once to think that it was stolen before buying it? These things go for $2000+ new. The only way someone in their right mind would sell an MBP for $800 was that it had major problems like heavy cosmetic damage, broken parts, etc.

Of course i knew it was stolen, Thats not the point. The point is i have a laptop i dont want to part with and if it means not using it while on campus I will just have to deal with that. EOT.

So you knew it was stolen, you had no intention of reporting the seller, and you have no intention of returning the item to the college.

If you're so keen on saving money, perhaps next time you should just go steal a MBP yourself, it would be cheaper. /sarcasm

come on, your roommates are paying 50 thousands for college, what they need an ipod for

Hello Everyone,

I am attending the University of Utah this fall and living on campus in a dorm-room. What do you guys recommend for security? should I get some kind of insurance for theft and accidents? software if stolen? I have a 15" MBP, that I bought a couple weeks ago. Also what should I do with my lacie rugged 160gb external hard drive and my ipod touch when I'm not in my room?

I suppose i was turning a blind eye. The idea of getting a laptop like this for so cheap seemed too good to be true. The temptation overcame my better judgment, I find your comment insulting. for future reference. EOT means end of topic, please respect that.

I just heard that once you login to the internet and the mac is reported stolen to apple, your mac sends your mac id and ip address to apple, so they can track it. Is this true?

You deserve to be insulted. You knowingly bought stolen property and helped out a criminal because you could get a good deal. That's dishonest and dishonorable. If you have no scruples about what you did, then you have larger problems than the possibility of being caught with stolen property.

@SoundSleeper: blame everything on temptation or maybe just poor morals? Not trying to sound high and mighty here but as much as i love a good deal, I would not even take a stolen mac for free. As a mac owner..I love my baby and can't imagine the horror of it ever being stolen, as well as having another mac owner go through that same ordeal. I'm sure a lot of other true mac users here would say the same. It's just not cool dude..

Just wondering how "respected" someone would feel if/when the rightful owner of the MBP shows up, with authorities (or worse) in tow? A "good deal" quickly becomes a "bad night".

That aside, I prefer to buy my Apple products from the Apple store. Just for the simple fact that I prefer NOT to inherit anyone else's problems, whatever they may have been.

How can you sleep at night knowing it's stolen? While your at college it would do you well to take some ethics/philosophy courses.

There are charges for that you know?

Like receiving stolen property.
I know this is JUST the internet but I'm sure they can use this ^ against you as evidence and all.

I would do most of what has been recommended so far. However, I have one extra recommendation. For the dorm room, I'd get a nice quality file cabinet that fits under or next to a desk that has a good quality lock. I don't know what the rules are in terms of bringing furniture to the dorms, but it's pretty much like having a safe in your dorm room. I'd keep all my goodies in there to keep from your roommates (if you don't trust them).

nice guys finish last.

Well, I couldn't. Last week after thinking this through I went to the University Police and asked to speak to someone in charge. I explained the situation, gave them the laptop & told them I would be willing to help them in anyway to find the theif. As a result, I was detained for several hours against my will, my apartment has been searched, my privacy violated, my money gone and I have been banned from all the computer labs at school. Pending further investigation I could possibly be looking at expulsion. I did the right thing because I felt like I would never want anything like that to happen to me, and now I'm f#cked.

You're lucky you weren't expelled, or arrested. What you did was a chargeable offense, especially since you admitted on this forum that you bought property you basically knew was stolen. Much better you turned it in than them finding out.
