I had an Air through law school. It was great to type on, had great battery life, and was sturdy. I think I liked that keyboard better too. You also get regular usb-a ports which might be handy when using USB drives for class or sharing notes etc.
I have a MacBook now. It's lighter and when I travel I just bring the tiny 29w charger and two USB cables (one with a lightning end for my phone, one usb-c end for my MacBook). The battery life is also excellent, and for what I do on it (word processing, email, web browsing) it's perfect. The screen is much better and the speakers are better.
I don't think you could go wrong with either. The Air is cheaper and really put up with a lot of abuse with no problems so I'd lean towards it in a school setting
