lol

just because the new model has been out for a month does not mean every college student with a perfectly good computer goes out and buys it..

wow..

I'm a college student with a unibody MBP too, bought on my own dime. I haven't seen any other unibody MBPs at my college either... I've seen a few unibody Macbooks though. Not that I mind... everyone who sits beside me (PC users) has a positive comment about this computer. (Wow! Look how thin it is! -- It gets how many hours of battery life?!? -- It's completely aluminum?! -- It has a backlit keyboard?! -- Look how fast it opens Powerpoint! -- How do you get your wireless to work so easily!? -- That screen is SO bright! -- etc. etc.)

The problem is that these machines are too new yet. Most college kids (aside from us Apple geeks) do not buy these machines at this time. After Christmas (start of Term 2) I'm sure I'll see many more. The vast majority of Macs present now are white Macbooks, followed by classic MBPs, Blackbooks, then Airs.

college student with unibody mbp

im slowly seeing more and more unibody mbp and mb arounds

to the op,
the unibodys just came out so its gonna take some time for the unibodys to show up

plus, the previous model design is around 5 years old...

Might have something to do with the cost of the out going model.
I just got the a new "previous model" 2.4 MBP for $1600. I couldn't justify the additional cost of the new unit.

i like the classic a lot more than the new MBP. I have a 17" early08 and enjoy it because of the screen size, firewire, and the display port options. Something that might bring me over the edge to a late08 MBP is maybe a 3.0ghz processor and the same features mentioned above.

At my university in Florida, tons of people have the older models, but i think that is because the new ones were not out before the semester started. Food for thought.

I'm in college (well, medical school actually) and I just got a new unibody MBP. It makes total sense that when looking at a population of people without jobs that many of them would opt for the cheaper computer. The old style notebooks are still good machines and are a pretty good value. Most college students also don't know about ADC. I was considering buying a refurb but with the ADC discount it made the new MBP's more into my price range.

I agree that we'll have to wait until the end of this summer/beginning of Fall to tell. If they continue offering the classic MB, then it may well be the big seller. Unfortunately, it probably won't be on account of FW.

I just have to restate my disagreement with the OP.

It really is just a matter of time. Next September you'll see more unibodys, simply because there are more new laptop buyers and the people with the plastics either graduate, upgrade or the machine breaks down.

The difference between the plastic and the base unibody is $250 with student pricing. You get 40Gb more, double the ram, better build quality, a newer processor, and a graphic card that doesn't absolutely suck.

Even as a student who only works during the summer, I would easily decide to go with the unibody. Some of my classes have textbooks that cost more than $250.

Everyone that I know that's buying new laptops and is interested in Macs is doing the same thing. Oh, and we're not all preppy daddy will pay for it types. Some have their parents pay for it, some spring for it themselves by working an extra shift or buying less energy drinks/alcohol and some do really stupid financial decisions.

Totally disagree.. Though I honestly think most people with last-gen MacBooks/Pros are completely unaware there is even a new revision.

I work in IT for a university and since the release of unibody, every person to buy a new mac has bought the new style.

College students seem to prefer:
- beer instead of wine
- Hooters instead of the Moulin Rouge
- Cancun instead of Monte Carlo

So? :D

My brother and I are college students. I bought a new unibody MBP, and my brother bought a unibody MB.

Don't you think it has something to do with the fact that these laptops came out a little more than a month ago? Especially with this economy, I can see why people can't afford newer unibodies.

A lot of my friends use FW only drives and stuff, so a classic is really the way to go!

You must have some tech savvy friends. A vast majority of people don't do any backing up at all.

FYI. Chalk up one med student with the 2GHz Aluminum MB.

I'm a college student and bought a classic MBP the week after the unibody ones where released. I prefer the classic keyboard and I got a 600 euro discount because it where the "old" models.
Since I'm writing two thesises for the moment the keyboard was really the deciding factor.
