ColorsyncUtility and external hard drives

I'm copying my photo library from iphoto on my G4 to an external hard drive. Most of the photos are unchanged from when I uploaded them from my digital camera, but some I've played around with: changed the exposure, improved the colour intensity etc. Now, when I copy them all onto the external hard drive, unchanged phtos show up on it as happy little jpeg icons; changed photos are there, but the icon is a grey blank and if I try to open any of them I get the message "Colorsync Utility cannot open files of this type". But they ARE jpegs... So what is it I'm doing wrong, and how do I sort it out please?
