Pro designer here, using an i7 Mac Mini with one of the older HD Cinema Displays from 2008 (M9178LL/A)

The screen works fine, but the colour is off, and has always been off. Trying to match Pantone swatches everything seems much lighter, both for Panton Plus and the older CMYK based Pantones.

I have a Spyder3 and calibrate it often but it's still pretty far from 'real life' so to speak.

So my question is will the newer thunderbolt displays be any better? Or is it better to get something third party, and if so would anyone have any suggestions.

I don't expect or need absolute perfection, but a close match would be beneficial.

Thank you.

I recall Anandtech.com had a review on Apple Thunderbolt display. If they do, they would measure color accuracy before and after calibration. I would look for such a review because the results are pretty black and white, not someone's perception.
