That sounds interesting. Was it not hard to get the metal end back onto the cut and flame-sealed edge?
The little bar at the end of the strap is plastic, not metal. The flame-sealed edge is rigid so I saw no need for that piece of plastic. Works for me but YMMV.
 
You are describing the sport nylon loop. This topic is about the braided solo loop. The ends are the metal clasps that attach to the watch. If you remove one of those, the band cannot be attached to the watch.
