Hello,

I am trying to wipe clean an old macbook by using the physical start up disc cd-rom. Problem is, the combo drive wont read any disc. It just spits it back out. Suggestions??? Could I copy all the contents of the startup disc to an external drive on my iMac, then connect the external to the old macbook and do it that way??? Any help on this would be much appreciated!

You could, but cloning would be better.
Use CarbonCopyCloner for that and a properly formatted* USB flash memory thumb drive for that.
You could also put the iMac in Target Disk Mode and connect both Macs via Firewire and then insert the grey Restore DVD from the MacBook into the iMac and be able to boot from that by holding down the OPTION key on the MacBook, after the iMac has started in Target Disk Mode and is connected to the MacBook via a Firewire cable**.
