If I wanted a crappy service such as this (which I don’t,) I would actually prefer to pay a company that wasn’t Comcast for it. Even if it were 5 times as much. I’d rather give Apple $25 per month for ad supported garbage than $5 to comcast. I hate them so much.

Data overages, how often do you go over 1TB of internet? I barely top 400gb monthly

4K
Have kids
Note that data caps are there to generate overage charges. There is no resource reason for them per Comcast. If they aren’t getting enough overage money, they will either adjust the limits or adjust how much the meter says and see who has the patience to fight them for a year (and can generate hard data). They have been caught doing all of this.

I have the xfinity package through my HOA. There isnt much content on demand. Find that it feels as if 80% of movies and shows are on HBO, showtime etc.

However i watch netflix, youtube through the x1 4k box. It works well.

Sadly, it is essentially a monopoly around this area for ISP & cable service.
AT&T offers a pathetic 18 Mbps, while WOW offers a DOA cable...

I don’t trust Comcast as far as I could throw them. They are a slime ball company for sure. Whatever you pay now, expect it to go up after contract. They are the worst.

Comcast says that thousands of free movies and shows will be offered, with free content from Tubi TV, YouTube, Xumo, Pluto TV, and more offered alongside subscription content from apps like Netflix, HBO, EPIX, and Prime Video. It will also be paired with podcasts and music services from Pandora, iHeart Radio, NPR One, among others.

I already get the free content that Comcast is advertising and it is free (no $5 / month) through my Roku.

The subscription content is also available through my Roku if I want to pay for it.

Why would you pay for a Comcast subscription when you can already get the Comcast subscription channels without a subscription (Roku) ?

That's a very smart move on their part ... in fact, Extremely smart !

It probably is a smart move by Comcast. Most customers will jump on the subscription for $5 while not realizing that the content is already available without the Comcast subscription.

“Flex” is intended to meet the desires of folks who believe themselves to be befuddled by the sheer number of currently available free, ad-supported streaming offerings; it’s an aggregate similar to other such services - for $5/month you don’t have to “put it all together” yourself. Meh...

But do not fear, for Comcast is ALSO offering “Instant TV” - its own live tv streaming service. For considerably more than $5/month lol. It is transitioning itself from primarily cable tv provision to internet provision, wherein it will sell IPTV to those who wish to not shop around for it but it will not be *dependent* on such sales. Note the Xfinity Mobile requirement of being a Comcast INTERNET subscriber...

Yikes, not much love for Comcast on here I see. I can't imagine that this company is worse than Bell and Rogers here in Canada and no where near as expensive.

I got a Comcast survey (I have their cheapo $50/month 17mbps offering, only broadband) and savaged them on it. And yesterday I got a call from an admittedly nice man who asked me thoughtful and probing questions about why I hated them so much. Maybe they are at least trying to improve. But until they go the T-Mobile route of transparency, I will only be their customer because I have no other broadband option, and then spending as little as I can with them.

Anyway the caller offered me Flex, which apparently I can’t use because I don’t have 25 mbps broadband. Not that I would have anyway.

Hmmm... this is interesting.

Why not just have an ATV app?

Because with JUST an ATV App, you may decide to forgo further services from Comcast AND/OR decide to just use ANOTHER TV Streaming App. With having you subscribing to THIS service and Box, you feel that Xfinity gives you everything and will stay with them. With a physical product in hand and their Voice Remote, you [they hope] will love the experience it gives you. with just using Roku/ATV/FireBox/etc, you can more easily drop one tv service for another without caring about the experience since you are using the alternative Streaming Box.

This is similar to Starbucks and K-Cups. Originally Starbucks was NOT selling them. Why? because making you go to THEIR store gave you the experience they wanted, even though they were selling Coffee Beans in stores. The idea was the experience of grinding or at least smelling the coffee before you brewed it...the experience. with a K-Cup, you are in it for speed, not flavor...and you may think it wasn't as great as the Starbucks Store coffee and decide to switch to another K-Cup. BUT, overtime, Starbucks realized selling K-Cups still brought in money. so, perhaps one day Xfinity will just let you subscribe to their Xfinity FLEX TV App but until then, they want to handle the experience.

Maybe, but a difference here is that Comcast is requiring you to use their internet to have this service. It would be similar to what you stated if this service was available to people without using their other services.

you [they hope] will love the experience it gives you.
This would be the only thing that would make sense to me. Maybe Comcast feels that they can give a better experience using their own equipment over an app for the various streaming devices out there.

I think they are just shooting themselves in the foot. I don't think that people want to add an additional box to their entertainment setup.

Maybe it would be good for people thinking of cord cutting.

I just think Comcast could convince more people of using this service if there was an app to use on the user's favorite device, and not the one Comcast wants them to use.

Because solving your own business issue rather than addressing your customers needs is a great market strategy o_O

Although we are talking Comcast here and I should expect nothing less.

How can any of the shows and movies be free if it’s $5 a month?

Ad supported

Last month I used 17.3TB (mostly streaming HD/4K content) plus lots of app updates. My highest was 54TB.

I highly doubt Comcast is desperate or in competition with Apple. They already have what Apple is trying to do and already have the customer base to make this way more successful than an "Apple Streaming" service would be. And they waited this long because Google finally made AndroidTV open to all manufacturers to make custom set top boxes, and this is what they've been working on
[doublepost=1553213882][/doublepost]
Comcast is not a competitor to Apple. Apple is not in the cable TV and ISP business

Not only that but Comcast controls both providing content (NBC) and broadcasting content (TV).

Even if they lose a bit on the TV side they make plenty on the NBC side.

I think we mean ATV app, plus chrome cast, Fire stick, etc....
