This is why I can't understand people going to those ridiculous "Team GB wooo!!" parades after the Olympics. The competitors win the medals, not you.

They get to live vicariously through another's achievements, I guess??

Those of us with more of a life, root for the best individuals, also a guess.

Bread and circuses??

This is something which I really, really don't understand. Patriotism in sport.

Why would someone support a competitor based on their nationality alone? It's a totally alien concept to me. Why not support them based on their performance or other appeal rather than just what country they come from?

i really do not understand your view? so let's take football, I live in Scotland support the Scottish football team who at this moment are not very good.
should I now support Brazil??????? Or Italy???
what's wrong with following someone from your own country?????

He's Scottish, I'm English but we are both British. Sure when it's England Vs. Scotland I hope we stuff Scotland and embarrass them.

However, when it's a British sports person playing I ALWAYS want them to win.

a lot of this has come from his 'joke' during the world cup in 2006. So what if he said he was going to wear the shirt of the nations England were playing, the English would do the same to Scotland...

All I can say is... Come on Andy!!!

Like someone born, raised and living in London supporting Manchester United? :D

As far as Wimbledon goes our lack of male winners since before Jesus must have something to do with it. Same for the soccer World Cup. Sport bores me rigid but those two events I do get absorbed in.
