Man I hate Chris Rock he's such an annoying, loud mouthed guy!

But I have to say most of the American comedians these days all seem alike unfortunately, but I guess that goes the same with the music too. Mass production .... :p

I enjoy the British comics more like Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Not only are they brilliant comedians but they write great stuff as well. People like this are true artists not just hollow vessels reciting badly written scripts.

So I was wondering what comedians everyone likes. I drive about 4 hours a day to and from work, and have found that listening to a comedian helps out with the road rage.

Mitch Hedberg (see the sig)
Lewis Black
Jeff Foxworthy
Bill Engvall

What comedians do you like?
Mitch Hedberg and Lewis Black are my favs too!!!!!!!!! :)

Old school Bill Cosby is hilarious, as is George Carlin, Robin Williams, and Richard Pryor.

Just watched an Eddie Izzard video of his San Francisco (not 'cisco or San Fran, but 'the City!') performance of Dress to Kill. Hilarious. Love his take on the Church, especially since I'm Anglican/Episcopalian!

I'm actually a huge Izzard fan, and I love that show... "A city of snakes" .... and the Englebert Humperdink bit. What a hilarious guy! My favorite show of his is still "Glorious", though.

Stand-out stand-ups would have to include Peter Kay, Jack Dee, Dave Gorman, and Jimmy Carr – we're off to see him live this coming December. In terms of comedy actors, I'd say Steve Coogan, The League of Gentlemen, Ricky Gervais and Simon Pegg.

Eddie Izzard
David Badiel
Stephen Fry (one of my heros)
Bill Hicks
Jimmy Carr
Homer J Simpson
Catherine Tate
Ricky Gervais

and many more

You'll love it, it's a cracking show. He destroyed a heckler at the show I saw.
Some Glaswegian guy shouted something stupid and Carr came back with how he didn't agree with the common assumption that all Glaswegians are mean alcoholics....most have moved to smack and share their needles.:D

I'll add Peter Kay to my list too.

I'd best remember to keep my trap shut, then... ;)

We're very much forward to it – I've heard nothing but good reports about his live act.

EDIT – I mentioned your comment about the heckler to my girlfriend and she informed me we're sat right at the front – so we'll definitely have to be on best behaviour. :D

Mitch Hedberg
Bill Cosby (I still think his Noah schtick is funny)
George Carlin
Monty Python (if we're counting troupes)
Steven Wright
Steven Lynch
Chris Rock
Eddie Murphy
Steve Martin
Richard Pryor
Kathy Griffin (her "D-list" special changed my mind about her)
You've more or less covered most of my favorite stand-up comedians, so it's easier for me to just quote your response. ;)

I've always been a big Jonathan Winters fan too, although I don't know that it's enough just to hear a recording of him -- you really need to see the facial expressions for the full effect.

"Voompa voompa voompa. *Ding!*"

As kids, we had the (get this) 8-track of some of his bits. We wore that thing out. Noah was good, as was Buck-Buck. Ah, the memories.

Also a fan of Foxworthy (he's more than "you might be a redneck" jokes) and Wright.

I can't believe that I'm the first to mention Lenny Bruce.

Lenny Bruce
Richard Pryor
Bill Cosby
Steve Martin
Robin Williams
Eddie Murphy
Rodney Dangerfield
Sam Kinison
Andrew Dice Clay
Dana Carvey
Dave Attell
Dave Chappelle
Steven Wright
Jeff Foxworthy
Eddie Izzard
Billy Connolly
Bill Hicks

Brian Regan and Pablo Francisco.....

FINALLY! somebody with taste! (I'll have to ignore the Foxworthy part). Regan and Francisco are hillarious! I love Francisco's little tortilla boy/Schwarzenegger bit.

Brian Regan is really good about coming up with crazy stuff that is actually quite clean. A mark of a truly great comic, is one that can make me laugh 'till I hurt, and do it without swearing up a storm. I'm not a prude by any stretch, but guys that think they're funny just cuz they can yell and scream are just plain stupid.

If you like Regan/Francisco, Dana Gould is highly recommended. Also, if you can catch some of Norm McDonald's old stand up (before his crappy shows), it's a hoot.

"listen to me... listen to me... he's trying to take my tortillas!"

definitely a classic along with

"pablo, hold my baby."/Hispanic Girlfriends bit. :D

I'd have to say my top list would have to include
Eddie Izzard
George Carlin
Robin Williams (standup)
Rowan Atkinson (standup and BlackAdder)
Bill Bailey
Chris Rock
Jimmy Carr

At the fringe festival this year i was really impressed by Paul Chowdry and Andy Carr as well

Edit: And i can't forget Steven Fry!

Ross Noble is the only guy who can probably make me fall over laughing :) best of all my mate has 2 tickets to see him at Manchester in November :D

Dave Spikey is brilliant too. saw him live last year.

Dylan Moran is pretty funny but i prefer him doing comedies rather than stand up

edit: cheers for jogging my memory guys. Gervais is brilliant, not much a fan of Peter Kay (liked him early on but now... nah). Apparently theres a comedian who was brought up near here called Jimmy Giggle or something daft. Supposed to be a comedy genius but i cant find anything about him! Jimmy Car and Bill Bailey... yup :D very funny guys.

your sig actually re-introduced me to mitch hedburg and now everyone i know is obsessed with him

Glad to hear it. The first time I saw Mitch was actually when he was on tour with Dave Attell and Lewis Black. I didnt think much of him at that point, mainly because I really wanted to hear Lewis Black. Mitch has a very different style of comedy, though. The way he just gives the short, one-liners and his stage apperance.

I saw him again at Georgia Tech, a little over a year ago. He actually walked behind the curtain on stage and continued doing his bit from backstage... it was halarious.

"dentists... tell you not to pick your teeth with any sharp, metal objects. and the first thing they take out is an iron hook."

over and over on car trips to and from ocean city maryland. didn't wear out the *8-track*, but did wear out the tape deck.

"am i on candid camera?!"
