There will continue to be jailbreaks. But I suspect you'll be seeing less reason for users to do it as iOS evolves.

Likely the same. Hire whoever is the smartest and best, even if they're hacking your OS. iOS will only improve from this addition.

True but there are so many things the iphone can be and jailbreaking seems to be the only way to do it. I don't see apple moving away from this, they have no reason.

----------

For everybody worrying about losing jailbreak, don't. There are so many known vulnerabilities by the jailbreak community that turns them into viable jailbreaking exploits that they stock pile them for future releases -- they obviously don't want Apple knowing what they know. You can count on jailbreaks for a long time coming, even if they're slow to appear.

Am I the only one that finds the sheer number of discovered vulnerabilities disturbing, though?

Yes but guys like this can help limit those exploits. Good for him after all and never know maybe apple will allow even more apps if their culture changes over time.

What does this mean for those of us who jailbroke through jailbreakme.com? Will we ever be able to upgrade to iOS 5 and keep our jailbreaks?

Harry Potter, anyone?

EDIT: OK, beat me to it...

----------

is it me or Comex looks like Geohot??????????:D

No, GeoHot looks like a blond Richard Stallman :D

What isn't debatable is that comex is a sell-out, and won't stand for his principles. I said this on Twitter, and I think it makes a good point:

What? He's not some hipster loyalist. He doesn't owe the jailbreak community anything. He's looking out for himself, as he should. Are you willing to give him a good paycheck each week in exchange for the work he does? No? Then you shouldn't be criticising him for thinking of his future.

Great (sarcasm), there goes hope for an iPad 2 iOS 5 jb.

There goes any hope of ANY Jailbreaks.

If he was the only one who could Jailbreak the iPad 2 then you gotta know the new iPhones will have the same if not better security

If they hired him its to work 24/7 to find any and all exploits and patch 'em up

No jailbreak= No iPhone for me.

But Hey....Windows Phone is looking better every day.

I kinda want to try something new anyway.

Android still has a few issues to work out that make it kinda unappealing at the moment.

Anyway. Cheers kid, no hard feelings and thanks for the Jailbreaks you DID provide.

Nobody can blame you for selling out

Apple lost in court, so now that JB is legal,

False.
The US Copyright Office ruled that JB is admissible as "fair-usage" and therefore not a Copyright infringement.
There has NEVER been any court ruling upon any matter pertaining to jailbreaking... For the simple and good reason that Apple has never carried out any legal action against JB.
Get your facts straight.

Those from the JB community who delude themselves that the iOS world revolves around them make me laugh. The two main reasons for non-geek people to JB are carrier-unlocking (which has some legitimacy especially for folks who travel abroad) and piracy.
Now that there is wide access to factory unlocked iPhones, the unavailability of JB will hardly make a dent on the iPhone's widespread popularity.

Customization is one of the MAIN reasons I do it.

I and many others want to use our phones ANY way we like.....So Yes, It will make a dent.

You've probably never figured out how to Jailbreak yourself.....You make me laugh

Actually, that's debatable. As I mentioned in my previous post, Apple may well lose up to 5% of iOS's market share through this. (making the two fairly safe assumptions that jailbreaking will now be impossible, and that half of those who jailbreak won't buy an iOS device if they can't jailbreak).

What isn't debatable is that comex is a sell-out, and won't stand for his principles. I said this on Twitter, and I think it makes a good point:

That was just a wonderful mix of inaccurate predictions [iOS's market share will simply continue to rise and jailbreak options will continue to exist] and insults towards a very talented young man because his opportunities and achievements are inconvenient for you. All this shows is that Apple is a meritocracy to the core. Comex isn't a sell-out.

Now, Harry Potter makes no more movies, he must search for himself a new job and smartly like he is, he has selected Apple!

This. You can't blame the guy. What does he owe us? In fact, we owe him. People have such sense of entitlement nowadays, it boggles my mind.

He just got a sweet job, and I say "congrats!"

What is wrong with this picture? Is this how we get ahead in today's society? We break the law and then get rewarded with a nice, plum (or apple) job? It's just wrong. That kid should be IN JAIL! It's always been amazing to me just how stupid mankind can be. We learn nothing from the past so we repeat it over and over...
Moral decay - it killed every great society ever created, including present-day America.

Which laws has he broken that would justify a prison sentence?

THIS!!!!

I don't ever claim to know anything about hacking but I know its not what is in Hollywood movies.

Maybe if you learned a thing or two about hacking, you'd know why it's not what is in hollywood movies. ;)

Here, a good read :

http://insecure.org/stf/smashstack.html

If anyone can get through that document, you will understand why Hollywood hacking is like it is. Then you'll probably get why racing movies aren't like real life racing or military movies aren't like the real life military or heck, even relationship movies aren't like real life relationships. ;)

Losing comex aint the end of the world-we still have some gr8 devs working their butts of for the jail breaking community-the cat & mouse chase will go on & on as long as there are iOS updates.

You think? If creating tools to JB ios was that easy, we'd see more talent coming out of the wood works doing so...but sadly we don't, so often rely on the same regular dev/hackers that continue to support the scene...but as we're witnessing, Apple is taking a keen interest in these talented individuals and snapping them up where it suits...

its a double-edge sword situation, depending on how you look at it..

Wonder how different this story would be if the courts hadn't ruled jailbreaking as legal.

Strictly speaking, the courts were not given a chance to weigh in on the matter. A panel of government bureaucrats within the Library of Congress, in consultation with government lawyers, made this decision after considering briefs from interested parties on both sides of the argument.

Now, the courts have clear instructions not to consider the DMCA's anti-circumvention clauses when dealing with any potential cases that might arise surrounding a mobile phone being jailbroken (or rooted if you're talking in Android parlance, or whatever other word you'd use to describe the process in other phones...).

Apple never publicly showed any signs of actually attempting to press charges against any individuals for violating the DMCA by jailbreaking their phones, and it is entirely speculative whether or not Apple was ever actually planning to. This was a preemptive move to prevent Apple from doing so.

Now, if Apple wants to press charges (and still, there's no evidence that they are planning to), they'll have to look for some other point of law outside the scope of the DMCA anti-circumvention clause. If they managed to find such a law, and if they could successfully persuade a court to agree with Apple's reasoning, then it still might be possible for Apple to force the issue and have jailbreaking declared illegal by other means. But, again, there's no evidence to support any notion that Apple is actually pursuing such a course of action right now.
