If only there was a way to add .cbr or .cbz files into newsstand, rather than simply in one of the comic apps.

Sadly it seems that any file in newsstand must be added through iTunes in-app purchases; which means that if - like me - you buy your comics in a bricks-and-mortar store then download scans in order to read on the go, you would be unable to do so without purchasing the comic twice.

I currently use an app called Simple Comic, which allows comic files to be added through WebDAV. As a comic file is merely a .zip or .rar containing nothing but images, the apps which display these files are very straightforward, it just seems a shame that it would not be possible to have them in the newsstand app. I currently read about 16 comic series, and it would be great to see them in with the newspaper and magazines that I read.

Perhaps a jailbreak would able that feature at a later date?

but...you can just use ibooks to store your 'copies' and read on the go.

the idea of newstand is for purchased magazines, newspapers etc to auto update when a new issue is out without you having to touch it...its just there.

so, just add your pdfs into ibooks? ...i downloaded a comic - (converted to pdf using calibre) by coheed & cambria (are you familiar with that?)
anyway, i did just that and use ibooks

The Coheed comics are something that I have had every intention of reading one day, along with listening to the albums, but have never managed to. Belting live band though.

I already read comics on my iPad very regularly - I have a collection of about 18Gb/1200 comics stored on my hard drive, and the app I currently use does the job wonderfully, but newsstand would be more wonderful.

I just like the idea of having all of my print media collected in one series of shelves, ideally I see no reason why iBooks and PDFs can't also be found in the Newsstand app. I realise the point of it is to collect periodicals to be automatically updated, but you can't deny that the sight of a series of books and magazines laid out like that, on the homescreen isn't more attractive than squirrelling them away in their own separate apps.

maybe in a future ios...one of the '200 new features' lol

and coheed are very good live..
I've got all the albums..which led to me wanting the comics - they go with each other, so ye...get the albums, read the comics..and if you find the comic collection somewhere...email me them please xD
ill check out that app you use for my iPad..

I've found ComicZeal works best for me. True I have to load them through iTunes, but all the features of the app make it well worth the effort.

Thank you for your contribution, but as stated in my initial post; I already have a very good, free, and effective comic reader app in SimpleComic; I just feel that any one of these apps could be newsstand enabled in a similar way to Robert Kirkman's Invincible app.

Totally agree Comic Zeal is my Newsstand. It's the best comic app out there.

The point I was trying to make with this thread has been well and truly missed.

There are multiple brilliant comic reading apps available for the iPad, but none of them utilise the Newsstand facility to present comics in a more attractive format.

Comiczeal itself is in the region of $8, and is a very good comic reading application; albeit non-universal, with a slightly backwards method of navigating the comics. I find that Simple Comic works very well for my comic reading needs, allowing catching up on long running series and regularly reading subscribed comics.

If a mod could please lock this thread.

What's backward about it? ComicZeal goes forward with a right swipe and backward with a left swipe. What type of control are you looking for that would be better?

Im confused by what you are looking for. I don't understand what Newsstand does so elegantly that iBooks can't do. They look the exact same. The only thing different is that iBooks is an app vs. Newsstand having a different background for the folder display. Newsstand is nothing but a folder of your periodicals. I use ComicZeal personally. I don't understand what's so backwards about it. You swipe and the page turns, double tap to zoom in, etc. What's so backwards about that?

And why lock this thread? No one is getting out of hand. We are simply trying to understand what you are looking for.
