Finally upgraded. Wanted to already last year, but then decided to wait for the "S"-phones...and ended up buying the XR. Ah, well.
The worst thing about these new phones: that silly camera-lens bump on the back.
I often have my phone sitting on the desk and now it does not lay flat! I had kind of repressed this fact.

Is there some sort of coaster or washer (with a cut-out for the camera) for this purpose, so I can lay it on my desk and it's flat?
I don't intend to put it in a case - I didn't buy it in ProductRED just to hide the color in a case.
And it's a big-ass phone anyway. No need to make it even bigger with a case.

Never had 3d touch, never had touch-id, never had more than one camera on each side - so I'm not missing anything. And I just paid 539 CHF for it (plus 10 or so for the headphone-jack adaptor). The joys of carrier-subsidies...

Now, the Apple Empire will of course strike back and release an SE-successor in March that is both small and great and cheaper.

Why not just go to Walmart, or the mall to one of those case booths and get a translucent silicone case? If you don't get a case it's likely the camera lens is going to scratch up since it's protruding.

You can potentially also consider a (thin) bumper rather than a case, or perhaps a thin clear case. Another potential option is a stand/dock of some sort.

(That is unless you can basically just get used to it not being flat when it's lying down and you aren't using it. Not trying to say that you should, but basically many people certainly have while initially feeling that it was different and then essentially forgetting about it.)

XR supposedly has the best battery life of any iPhone ever produced. That's what sealed the deal.
I was OK with the 4S pixel density, and it looks like it's OK on the XR, too.

Isn't the lens made from sapphire? Should be pretty scratch-resistant then.

Can't seem to find anything even on aliexpress.

It's up to you. I'm not sure how much your VAT tax is, but I'm assuming you paid more than an American pays. Might be worth it to put a thin translucent case on it, for what you paid and it's value. It's your money though, good luck to ya...

So what is the point of your post in this thread? OP upgrades to an Xr and complains about the rear camera bump and you tell him the 8 plus is better... which isn't an Xr and has a rear camera bump. Ok... thanks for contributing.

I'm not really complaining. The camera bump is a thing since the 7, IIRC.

I dare say I can't understand them trying to shave microns off the thickness of stuff - and leaving that bump.
They could make it even and fill the space with the battery.

The older phones get less subsidy. The XR was the best compromise. I hope to get five or six years of use out of it. Unless I drop it.

There seems to be quite a bit of demand for the XR in red - it took a bit longer than anticipated from order to delivery.

VAT is 7.7% - included in the 539 mentioned above.

I think I paid even more for the 3GS back then.

I know people who do not enclose their iphones in a case. I am a klutz and I put my max into a silicon case, which I really like because it's very grippy. YMMV and you do what is comfortable with you. Just make sure you have applecare+.

.

Grats on your upgrade OP. Totally agree with you, can you imagine how awesome the XR would be with 50% more battery life.

I do have my blue XR in a clear case. Don’t really notice the case much but it does add drop/bump protection, save my iPhone XR a couple of times already.

Wow, respect OP, for using the 4S this long. That's pretty cool

One of my best friends used a 4S until it died on him, and replaced it with a 6s which he is going to run into the ground before he upgrades

Contrary to many of us (myself included) who are on the never-ending-always-justifying upgrade treadmill, he really uses his products as long as he can

best thing about the XR is battery. I unplugged mine at 6:34am this morning; it is currently 9:36pm and the XR is at 49% battery

incredible!

I hate the camera bump.

Before the iPhone 6, camera bumps were an issue for Apple's competitors, now it seems that all phone makers including Apple have embraced the bump.

I agree with the OP on this. What is the point of having the phone a tiny bit thinner, if the camera sticks out? It seems like that extra space could of been used for something else such as more battery.

Are you sure?o_O

Wow! What an upgrade

or had anything solid in pocket to cause that damage.
That sounds like a personal problem for him. ;)

In any event, a sapphire lens would be beneficial for scratch protection, not so much for being shatterproof.

To the OP, I know it's pricey, but the Apple clear case is pretty slick and will show off that beautiful red color. I just bought an Xs and would never have previously considered an Apple branded case. But my go to case manufuacturer (Elago - they make a great low cost case for the 5 and 6 design phones) didn't have anything I wanted for the Xs. So I took a flier on the Apple silicone case. Great item and if the clear case for the Xr is similarly built, you'll be happy. You'll be light a few more dollars, but it should be well worth it mate.

Pfft! Who cares? I'd take the 8 Plus over the XR. It has TouchID (which I prefer over FaceID), 3D-Touch, a higher resolution display, and it costs less.

Its battery also does not last as long as the XR's.

Still thinking about cases....

I've got an A5-sized paper-notebook that I currently use as a makeshift coaster for the time being.

I’m sorry to hear about your recent downgrade, OP.. :D

Obviously, the 4s internals/camera are very outdated, but in every other aspect, the 4s was the best iPhone ever imo. I wanted to keep mine forever, but had to upgrade after 2 years because an iOS update bricked it. I wouldn’t have been able to last as long as you did though. I was forced to upgrade from the 4s, but I volunteered to upgrade from my subsequent 5s to the SE because of the addition of Apple Pay, along with Touch ID, more storage, and better camera. All of those are very convenient features, but Apple Pay’s cc security was what sealed the deal for me. But I sorely miss the better one-handed usability of the 4s’ shorter 3:2 screen.

Much respect to you for holding out for so long. I hope you get as much use out of your XR. I would also love an SE successor (in regard to keeping the same size and even same design), but it seems highly unlikely, so you can probably rest easy that you made the best possible choice. I agree that camera bump is an unfortunate compromise.
