Yes yes yes, I've heard and read the previous threads that argue the pronunciation. And usually got heated by the rather rude remarks that people use in arguing this somewhat innocuous subject. But it is Mac OS 10, not Mac OS 'Ex'. I hate being wrong :(

    WWJS?

Considering it's his company and his product, that's pretty conclusive.

Yeah! Why should I give a crap what Apple tells me to say. OS eX is how it'll remain for me.

Umm sure man. I call an iPod an iPod because I know how to read. I guess unless I called it a '1 Pod'.

OS 'TEN' is correct. The 'X' represents a Roman numeral. Listen to Steve Jobs on-stage.

Maybe OSXI could be "OS Zee"
    Followed by OSXII "OS Zeeeee"
    And OSXIII "OS Zeeeeeeeee"

Then OSIV "OS ive" (like give)

Why people pronounce it 'x' - They get to say everyone's favourite word all day without sounding like a perv. :D

do the majority of old skoolers have more of a tendancy to say "ten" rather than "ex"?

ive been in the Mac OS since version 6 and am used to describing the Mac OS by numbers.

I've been a Mac user since system 7 in 1995, and I say "OS ex" for 3 reasons.

Firstly, OS X is a completely different OS than the OSes that came before it, so OS X doesn't seem like a continuation of Mac OS 1 through 9.

Secondly, most people know it as "OS X," so if you call it "OS ten" then most non-Mac geeks will have no idea what you're talking about.

    Thirdly, "OS ex" sounds cooler.

It's called OS X and pronounced "OS ten." Anyone who ever said "OS ex" is clearly demonstrating their ignorance.

    True and true.

"Os Ex" does not sound cool, it sounds like you're 10 years old and think it sounds cool.

Further, it sounds like you don't understand a thing about Roman Numerals and - despite claiming to be a "Mac Geek"- have never bothered listening to a keynote, talking to someone at an Apple Store or watching a video posted on Apple's own site describing their operating system (all three of which say "Os Ten").

When people get all high and mighty about the pronunciation of an operating system it makes me want to snipe them. :D
But I don't care if you say 10 or ex.

While I would agree you look pretty stupid pronouncing a Roman Numeral as a letter, I think you should just leave people to say it how they want. We don't force southern people to sound out you all instead of y'all, and we don't criticise people for saying car-mel instead of caramel, so this, while it is different, shouldn't be treated all that different. But to play it your way, if you don't want people to say ex (I say 10 personally), then don't spell Windows as Windoze :p

P.S., that was directed at the general ex-sayer-haters, not to the OP specifically.

Of course it's OS "ten". Just like it's Star Wars: Episode "one" (not Episode "i"), Rocky "five" (not Rocky "vee"), and Super Bowl XLII is pronounced "forty-two" (not exlee).

The difference here is that it's not a dialect, accent or any other sort of pronunciation thing.

It's just plain using the wrong word.

And it's not that they even use it that bugs me - they can call it whatever they want - it's the folks who insist "ex" is correct that are annoying.

I know, I said that. I'm just essentially agreeing that it doesn't really matter how they say it and saying it in a different way :p

I rarely have the occasion to use it in a sentence anyway.
