I buy kindle books the same way as this new process and its not a big deal at all. Takes 30 seconds. If they do nothing to increase pricing, reduce the number of sales, or put down any of the digital only titles, I dont think this is the big deal you folks are making of it.

They have also removed IAP purchases from the Android app as well today.

No, they haven't. It's just Apple for now. My Android tablet got me this email today:

Dear Comics Enthusiast,*

We've made changes to our Google Play Android Comics app so pleaseupdate to version 3.6. In this new version, we have a new comiXology in-app purchase system and a great new cart feature, one of our most requested features.

In the new app, you may be prompted to update your payment information to continue purchasing books. This is a one-time action after which you can purchase inside the app.

We've added a*$5 comiXology eGift Card**to your account! You don't have to do anything, just shop for your favorite comic books and graphic novels. Hurry! This eGift Card expires on 5/25/14.

They removed Google's Wallet service (which requires 30% cut) and replace it with Paypal or something like that, and which has a smaller % cut.

I have a feeling Google may force Wallet to be used for all Google Play apps in the near future.

Is there a way to extract all the comics I bought? I don't feel safe downloading digital comics through them anymore and will go back to other means to download them.

But the prices has been hiked. I used to buy comics for 7 SEK (~0.77 euro) but logging in to comixology they now charge 0.89 euros. Quite the price hike for a worse buying experience.

Puke... this decision is solely profit-based - there's nothing like sacrificing user experience because of greed (and that's aimed at both Apple and Amazon)!

Microsoft doesn't seem to have a problem using IAP for Office. Amazon could easily afford the 30% cut to Apple. LOTS of companies do.

You assume that customers buying Kindle books on Amazon are the same as the ones buying comics on the ComiXology app.
Besides, you don't need to give your credit card info to buy Kindle books. Without ComiXology's IAP, that's no longer an option.

Personally I always go to the Comixology website to make sure they get all of the proceeds. The overall experience on the website for me was much better, plus I never had to worry about being signed in or out (due to app updates or my kid jacking something up.)
The site requires your credit card info, the App Store and IAPs don't. I've spent hundreds of dollars at ComiXology so far; sure that was only 70% of my dollars, but it seems a lot better than 100% of $0.

Well, when there's competition the consumer always wins!

Looks like a strategic move to chip away at iPad's functionality. Shame Apple's efforts to push comics through iBooks were so halfhearted and poorly coded.

This is a loss all round. As consumers, it's made more difficult to buy comics digitally, which means a lot of people are going to find alternative methods. This means comixology/amazon are not going to get as much money as they previously were.

Except it's on record that comixology do an overwhelming amount of business on iTunes. There's a reason they have been in the top 20 grossing app charts for the past three years. One article I read said it was as high as 90%.

I don't have an iPad but I saw an app similar to Comixology on my brother device: it still have in app purchase, comics are not mainstream but they are slightly animated with special effects and the result is really cool!

now...if I only could recall the name.... :(
anyone knows it?

Can't you pay via paypal?

I'm not happy about giving my card details, especially as this company were compromised a few months ago.

I see all the prices are in US dollars:rolleyes:

So now I have to do a conversion just to see how much it will cost. I'm sure there will be extra charges for me from my bank.

I'm not happy about this turn of events. I liked the comiXology app. But, as with many others here, I'm probably not going to buy anymore, etc.

... E-comics need to get a universal standard form that you can read in any app.

That has existed for quite some time. There are actually two universal formats, CBR and CBZ. These need to be standardized and developed further to allow for additional features beyond just the simple reading of flat comics though. Right now, these two formats are essentially just zipped (or RAR) archives of JPEGs of the pages. This does, however, allow for a simple form of DRM in that the zip archive can be encoded. Of course, I'm really not that big a fan of DRM...

Are there any alternatives?

Sounds like the comic people aren't happy with Amazon. For each complaint on MR, they'll tell 10 friends, who will tell 10 friends and so on. Sounds like Amazon really screwed the pooch on this. If comixology is as ubiquitous as it sounds, it will either set back the comic industry, or we'll see an alternate pop up in a few months.

this is like 1% of users who are always upset about something
they will complain, but the normal people will just ignore them

Normal people are likely to be annoyed and frustrated when they discover they can't view the store in app and click a buy button tied to their AppleID like the majority of apps. Normal people like things that just work without having to jump through hoops.

Yeah, kindle is so screwed because I have to buy my books through amazon

I don't mind buying my kindle books on amazon's site or comics from the comixology site. It's just all the currency conversions that are a bit irritating. It reminds me of of my early days of buying ebooks from fiction wise and messing about with conversions.

I'm a bit miffed by it but I'm not going to cut my nose off to spite my face so to speak! Why deprive myself of reading my favourite comics.

I bet comic shops are loving this news. I doubt I will buy anymore digital comics now, this is just is too complicated, no more impulse buying for me. Good news for my wallet I guess. The way it setup now it will be easier to pirate the books then to buy them. If I really want a book I guess I will buy it the old fashion way at the comic shop. Goodbye comixolgy it was fun while it lasted.
