1. Only definite one: You get $800+ now.

2. You get 2-3x more in a few months.

3. You deny both potential buyers and they come back with much stronger offers.

4. In a lot of years from now you're offered a very significant amount of money for the domain.

5. Facebook buys the domain for a very high price.

6. Facebook gets the domain and you get nothing.

7. You create a successful site that prospers because of the domain name.

Different things that could happen, but the only definite thing is #1. If you want $1k now, take it. If you want to see what happens in the future, then there's always a lot of possibilities that could happen, but none of them may actually happen. Still, $50k out of nowhere is more life-changing than $1k.

It is true that eventually Facebook may just offer you $5k just to have it, and it's easier to buy outright, and potentially cheaper, than to get all legislative - but if you start using it as a business or some kind of commercial endeavour, you can bet Facebook will be down on you like a ton of bricks. It's their name. Even if they don't buy the domain, they can give you a lot of trouble if you start using their name without permission.

Be aware, however, that if at a later point Facebook itself wants that domain, they'll probably get it without paying you anything. It uses their name, which is a trademark. It's not like a common surname that you can claim rights to.

Just a thought. I'm not saying sell now, but if you wait long enough you might not get anything. :)

I reckon not if he registers 'Face Bookmarket Place' as his own business. ;)

you're fooling yourself! The laws regarding trademarks don't allow you to use that kind of deceitful tricky spelling to get around the law :p

facebookmarketplace?

i'd sell now. I don't see them ever being interested in that. Who knows where facebook will be a year from now. Remember MySpace?

Idk it's not even that clear where the Marketplace is when you log into facebook... first time I tried to find it took me like 10 minutes

I think the main question is: do you want $1k now or would you be happy if you didn't make anything in the future but there was a possibility for a significantly higher number that could potentially be life-changing?

What is life changing money anymore? A million isn't even enough to retire on really anymore. It'll never be worth more than a few grand at most, a lawsuit at worst from facebook.

Decided to just sell privately for $1400.00 today....... was stressing me out too much and I have too many other things to deal with right now to keep looking into this.

Good decision or bad? I am just going to kill myself if facebook buys it from the people i sold it to for like 9 million dollars or something you know

I think you made a good decision. You turned $6.50 into $1400? good for you.

Facebook doesn't really need that domain to have a marketplace after all. They could do a subdomain........like Yahoo which has shopping.yahoo.com

A high amount of money, maybe $50k, may not be hugely life-changing, but you could use that to buy a lot more than whatever you have now. In the right hands, a million dollars could be turned into much more, or could at least be life-changing enough to allow you to buy a 1.5 million dollar house versus a $500k house and put you in a different class.

There was a low chance the OP could make significantly more, so the OP made a smart move.

Smart move, OP. Not a bad investment at all. Imagine if you had the same ratio of return on investment with that $1400... it's perspective.

I say, congrats on the good deal :)

Oh, that's what the Facebook Marketplace is. Needs a catchy domain, I never heard about it before. I would trust that more than Craigslist, could be big with the right backing.
