Series 5 is almost 6 month's old but out of curiosity who actually uses the compass app on their watch for basically anything? Or was the app basically a waste of time?

The app not directly but the feature yes, it's been very useful when using Workoutdoors.
The compass was my most wanted feature for the series 5, I can’t believe it happened.
I use the compass when navigating in the mountains. I use mapping software on the watch to pinpoint my location, then take an approximate bearing and then switch to the compass. I recently tested the watch in awful visibility relying solely on the watch for over 2 hours in featureless terrain and managed without needing my backup devices (iPhone, dedicated GPS unit, standard map and compass) which stayed in my backpack.
