How can you "force" a recalibration?? I evidently screwed up when calibrating mine the first time, and now the compass is way off. But it hasn't asked me to re-calibrate.
 
My 3GS is being replaced because of this. I brought it today but for got to unjailbreak:( oh well, it'll be replaced on thursday.

Maybe Apple can squeeze that in in the upcoming 3.1 update. Don't really use the maps or compass that much to really care though

Switch it from Magnetic to True north (or vice versa) via the "i" on the bottom right hand corner of the compass interface. Whenever you do that it should ask you to re-calibrate.
 
No amount of recalibration has allowed my 3GS to come close to accurate. A real compass placed next to the iPhone's digital compass never produces the same result. Even changing the elevation of the phone without changing location in another plane.

maybe your real compass is broke.
